William Russell (Bolton MP)
William Russell (28 August 1859 – 31 October 1937) was a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He was the son of George Russell. He was a solicitor in Bolton, Lancashire, retiring as the head of his firm in 1920. 1923 United Kingdom General Election
The 1923 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 6 December 1923. The Conservative Party (UK), Conservatives, led by Stanley Baldwin, won the most seats, but Labour Party (UK), Labour, led by Ramsay MacDonald, and H. H. Asquith's reunited Liberal Party (UK), Liberal Party gained enough seats to produce a hung parliament. It is the most recent UK general election in which a third party (here, the Liberals) won over 100 seats. The Liberals' percentage of the vote, 29.7%, has not been exceeded by a third party at any general election since. MacDonald formed the First MacDonald ministry, first ever Labour government with tacit support from the Liberals. Albert Law
Albert Law (28 December 1872 – 22 October 1956) was a British Labour Party politician. Law was born in Bolton, and worked as a cotton spinner in the town. He became active in the Bolton and District Operative Cotton Spinners' Provincial Association, serving as it president from 1916 to 1918 and then again from 1920 to 1922. Sir Joseph Herbert Cunliffe, (1 July 1867 – 9 April 1963) was a British barrister and Conservative Party politician. Cunliffe was called to the bar in 1896 and took silk in 1912. 1922 United Kingdom General Election
The 1922 United Kingdom general election was held on Wednesday 15 November 1922. It was won by the Conservative Party, led by Bonar Law, which gained an overall majority over the Labour Party, led by J. R. Clynes, and a divided Liberal Party. This election is considered one of political realignment, with the Liberal Party falling to third-party status. The Conservative Party went on to spend all but eight of the next forty-two years as the largest party in Parliament, and Labour emerged as the main competition to the Conservatives. Robert Tootill
Robert Tootill (22 October 1850 – 2 July 1934) was a British politician. He was a Labour Party (UK), Labour Party Member of Parliament (MP) from 1914 to 1922 for the constituency of Bolton (UK Parliament constituency), Bolton. Born in Chorley, Tootill worked as a Labour Correspondent to the Board of Trade, and also served on Bolton Town Council for many years from 1888. He became secretary of Bolton Trades Council, and was also secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Machine and General Labourers.
