William Rupert Davies
(William) Rupert Davies (12 September 1879 – 11 March 1967) was a Welsh-Canadian author, editor, newspaper publisher, and politician. Davies was born in Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, Wales and immigrated to Canada in the late 1800s after his family's tailor business failed. He later married Florence Sheppard McKay, of Loyalist stock. The Davies moved to Thamesville, then to Renfrew, Ontario and later to Kingston, Ontario. Following a successful career as publisher of the ''Kingston Whig-Standard'', Davies was appointed to the Senate on 19 November 1942 on the recommendation of William Lyon Mackenzie King. Sitting as a Liberal, he represented the senatorial division of Kingston, Ontario, a position he held until his death. In 1932, Davies renewed his connection with Montgomeryshire and purchased Fronfraith Hall, in Llandyssil. He continued to own Fronfraith until 1948, when he moved to Brookland Hall. Leighton Hall, Powys
Leighton Hall is an estate located to the east of Welshpool in the historic county of Montgomeryshire, now Powys, in Wales. Leighton Hall is a listed grade I property. It is located on the opposite side of the valley of the river Severn to Powis Castle. The Leighton Hall Estate is particularly notable for the Hall which was decorated and furnished by the Craces to designs by Pugin in his Houses of Parliament style, and for the Home Farm, a model farm, which was to be in the forefront of the Victorian industrialised ''High Farming''. Leighton Hall was also the birthplace of the much disparaged hybrid Cupressocyparis leylandii hedge tree. The office of High Sheriff of Montgomeryshire was established in 1541 since then a High Sheriff was appointed annually until 1974 when the office was transformed into that of High Sheriff of Powys as part of the creation of Powys from the amalgamation of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Brecknockshire. Between the Edwardian Conquest of Wales in 1282 and the establishment of the High Sheriff of Montgomeryshire in 1541 the sheriff's duties were mainly the responsibility of the coroner and the Custos Rotulorum of Montgomeryshire. The Office of High Sheriff remained first in precedence in the County until the reign of Edward VII when an Order in Council in 1908 gave the Lord Lieutenant of Montgomeryshire the prime Office under the Crown as the Sovereign's personal representative.
