William I, Earl Of Ross
William I, Earl of Ross (Gaelic: ''Uilleam''; d. 1274) was ruler of the province of Ross in northern Scotland. William appears as early as 1232, witnessing a charter as the son of Ferquhard, Earl of Ross. He succeeded his father as Earl around 1251. He played a pioneering role in the Scottish reconquest of the Hebrides, which had been under Norwegian control. Indeed, in many ways, he may be regarded as the instigator of Scottish aggression. Willie Ross, Baron Ross Of Marnock
William Ross, Baron Ross of Marnock, (7 April 1911 – 10 June 1988) was the longest serving Secretary of State for Scotland, holding office from 1964 to 1970 and again from 1974-76, throughout the premiership of Harold Wilson. Early life and military career Born in Ayr, the son of a train driver, he was educated at Ayr Academy and the University of Glasgow and became a schoolteacher before World War II. He served in the Highland Light Infantry in India, Burma and Singapore and was then a major in Lord Louis Mountbatten's headquarters in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). At one point he guarded Rudolf Hess. He became a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1945. Sir William Charles Ross (3 June 1794 – 20 Jan 1860) was an English portrait and portrait miniature painter of Scottish descent; early in his career, he was known for historical paintings. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1842. Life and work Ross was born in London and descended from a Scottish family who had settled at Tain in Rosshire. He was the son of William Ross, a miniature-painter and teacher of drawing, who exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1809 to 1825. His mother, Maria Smith, a sister of Anker Smith, the line-engraver, was a portrait-painter, who exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1791 and 1814, and died in London on 20 March 1836, aged 70. At an early age young Ross showed great ability in art, and in 1807 received the "lesser silver palette" from the Society of Arts for a copy in chalk of Anker Smith's engraving of James Northcote's "Death of Wat Tyler". William Ross ( gd, Uilleam Ros ; 1762–1790/91) was a Scottish writer of Romantic poetry in Scottish Gaelic from the Isle of Skye and a parish schoolmaster, who is often referred to as, "The Bard of Gairloch." His most famous song is "Cuachag Nan Craobh", which is now better known as The Skye Boat Song from new lyrics added a century later. More than two hundred years after his death, Ross remains a highly important and admired figure in Scottish Gaelic literature. According to Derick S. Thomson, "Ros is justly regarded as the leading poet of love of the eighteenth century."
