William Robinson (painter, Born 1936)
William Francis Robinson AO (born 16 April 1936) is an Australian painter and lithographer. Early life William Robinson was born in Brisbane in 1936, and studied art at Ballarat High School from 1950 to 1953. After graduating, he began working as an art instructor. Robinson commenced national service on 4 January 1955 with the Royal Australian Air Force serving as an Aircraftsman, service number: A115716. In his teaching career, Robinson eventually became head of the Painting Department at the Brisbane College of Advanced Education in 1982. In 1989 he retired to work full-time on his paintings. Artistic Career Robinson held his first solo exhibition at the Design Arts Centre, Brisbane in 1967. He rose to international prominence as a part of the exhibitions Australian Perspecta in 1983 and The Sixth Bienniale of Sydney in 1986. Order Of Australia
The Order of Australia is an honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the advice of the Australian Government. Before the establishment of the order, Australian citizens received British honours. Wendy Sharpe
Wendy Sharpe (born 1960 in Sydney) is an Australian artist who lives and works in Sydney and Paris. She is the only child of British parents and has a Russian Jewish heritage. Her father is the writer and historian Alan Sharpe. She counts among her influences paintings by Chaïm Soutine and Max Beckmann. /sup> She is the winner of numerous major awards including the Archibald Prize, the Sulman Prize, the Portia Geach Memorial Prize and The Adelaide Perry Drawing Prize. Fred Cress
Frederick Harold Cress (10 July 1938 – 14 October 2009) was a British painter who migrated to Australia and won the Archibald Prize in 1988 with a portrait of John Stanley Beard, John Beard. Cress was born in Pune, Poona, British Raj, but went to England with his parents in 1948, when he was ten. He was educated at the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, Birmingham College of Art in England, and migrated to Australia in 1962 as a "ten pound Pom", meaning that he only had to pay ten pound for his fare to Australia. Cress met the painter Anne Judell and married her in 1967; they divorced in 1991. He started his career painting figuratively but became well known for his abstract work in the late 60s and 70s. He returned to figurative painting in the late 80s after he won the Archibald Prize with a portrait of his friend and colleague, John Beard. Davida Allen
Davida Frances Allen (born 20 October 1951) is an Australian painter, filmmaker and writer. Early life and education Davida Allen was born on 20 October 1951 in Charleville, Queensland. She studied under Betty Churcher at the Stuartholme School, Brisbane (1965–69) and later under Roy Churcher (Betty Churcher's husband) at Brisbane Central Technical College (1970–72). Career Allen has written and illustrated two books, and has created a 50-minute film, ''Feeling Sexy'' (1999), on the struggles of an artist attempting to reconcile the conflicting demands of bohemia and suburbia. The film was invited to the Venice Film Festival. She frequently confronts the themes of family and sexuality; regarding the latter she has said: "if we are truly feminist in the fullest sense of the word, we shouldn't have felt we had to lock it away or be really careful about it. Catherine Hunter (filmmaker)
Catherine Hunter is an Australian filmmaker, journalist, television producer and director. Hunter joined the Nine Network's ''Sunday'' program in 1985. After two decades of producing documentary-length cover stories on the arts, she left the program in 2006 to work as a freelance documentary maker, specialising in films about Australian artists. Most of her independent films have been broadcast on ABC TV. In addition to her broadcast documentaries, Hunter has contributed commissioned films for the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Portrait Gallery in conjunction with exhibitions of Australian and international artists, including Anselm Kiefer.
