William Reid (rugby League)
William Reid was an English professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1910s and 1920s. He played at representative level for Great Britain (non-Test matches), and England, and at club level for Widnes. Reid won a cap for England while at Widnes in 1914 against Wales. Reid played in Widnes' victory in the Lancashire County League during the 1919–20 season. Widnes Vikings
The Widnes Vikings are an English rugby league club in Widnes, Cheshire, which competes in the Betfred Championship. The club plays home matches at the Halton Stadium. Founded as Widnes Football Club, they are one of the original twenty-two rugby clubs that formed the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895. Their historic nickname is "The Chemics" after the main industry in Widnes, but now they use their modern nickname, "The Vikings". The club enjoyed a period of success in the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s, and were frequently described as "Cup Kings" reaching the Challenge Cup Final 7 times in 10 years between 1975 and 1984. The 1920 Great Britain Lions tour was the third British national rugby league team or 'Lions' tour of Australasia, where it was winter and matches were played against the Australian and New Zealand national sides, as well as several local teams. In Australia, the three-Test match series was won by the hosts. In New Zealand another three-Test series was played and won by the visitors. The tour was a success and brought in a handsome profit. The 1919–20 Northern Rugby Football Union season was the 25th season of rugby league football. Season summary A full championship competition returned after suspension during the First World War as well as a full Challenge Cup campaign. Hull F.C. recorded their first Championship when they defeated Huddersfield 3-2 in the play-off final. Huddersfield had ended the regular season as league leaders and won the Challenge Cup defeating Wigan 21-10. Widnes won the Lancashire League and Huddersfield won the Yorkshire League. Oldham beat Rochdale Hornets 7–0 to win the Lancashire Cup, and Huddersfield beat Leeds 24–5 to win the Yorkshire County Cup. The England national rugby league team represents England in international rugby league. The team, largely formed from the Great Britain team which also represented Wales and Scotland, is run under the auspices of the Rugby Football League. It participates in the Rugby League World Cup, Four Nations and Test matches. The team dates to 1904, when they played against a mixture of Welsh and Scottish players in Wigan. Until the 1950s, they regularly toured Australia and New Zealand and played both home and away matches against neighbours Wales and France, but when it was decided that Great Britain would tour the Southern Hemisphere instead of England, France and Wales became the only regular opponents. Initially, the 22 clubs that broke away in 1895 played in one combined league; however, the following season saw the addition of many clubs, and the League was split into two separate county competitions.
