William R. Haughton Memorial Pace
The William R. Haughton Memorial Pace (formerly known as the Governor Alfred E. Driscoll Pace) is a mile and one-eighth race for Standardbred Free-For-All pacers age four and older run annually at Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Currently, the race is held on the same card at the Meadowlands every third Saturday in July, alongside Stanley Dancer Memorial, Mistletoe Shalee, Dorothy Houghton Memorial, Hambletonian Maturity and Miss Versatility, as well as one of the racetrack's most signature events, the Meadowlands Pace. The Meadowlands Racetrack (currently referred to as Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment) is a horse racing track at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, United States. The track hosts both thoroughbred racing and harness racing. It is known popularly in the region as "The Big M". Meadowlands has year-round horse racing as well as a number of bars and restaurants. History Opened in the mid-1970s, Meadowlands Racetrack held its first-ever harness race on September 1, 1976, while thoroughbred racing commenced on September 6, 1977. Always B Miki
Always B Miki (foaled 2011) is a Champion American Standardbred pacer. As a younger horse, he raced mainly at Hoosier Park in Indiana but came to national prominence in his three-year-old season. Favored to win the final of the Breeders Crown 3YO Colt & Gelding Pace, the colt fractured his leg before the race and needed to undergo surgery. After a long layoff, he returned to win the 2015 Breeders Crown Open Pace. At age five, he won several major races and set multiple speed records including a world record of 1:46 at The Red Mile. He received the 2016 Dan Patch Award for Harness Horse of the Year. Background Always B Miki is a bay horse with a white star on his forehead and a white coronet on his left hind leg. The Adios Pace is a horse race for three-year-old Standardbred colts and geldings run annually since 1967 at a distance of one mile at Meadows Racetrack in North Strabane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Historical race events The 1972 race final was the only time the Adios Pace ended in a dead heat. In 1997 the race was renamed the Delvin Miller Adios Pace to honor the legendary Hall of Fame driver/trainer Delvin Miller. 1997 also saw the only winner disqualification in the race's history when Dream Away finished first by five lengths but was disqualified for interference. In 1985, Nihilator won a division of the Adios Pace but was withdrawn from the final which would have been a match race against Marauder. To win, Marauder merely jogged around the track alone. For 2008 the race was moved to Pocono Downs in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania due to construction work at The Meadows. Catello Manzi
Catello R. Manzi (born June 27, 1950) is an American harness racing driver and trainer. Manzi's nickname is 'Catman'. Born in Monticello, New York, Manzi grew up in Sullivan County, New York, in a harness-racing family. His father Alfonso was a horse trainer. He drove his first race at Monticello Raceway in the late 1960s. Manzi's first career win came at Pocono Downs in 1969. In 1974 Manzi set a Monticello Raceway record for most wins by a driver. The 1994 Yonkers Trot winner, Bullsville Victory, was driven by Manzi. Manzi also drove Sugar Trader to victory in the 2003 Yonkers Trot. The Yonkers Trot is the second leg of the Triple Crown of Harness Racing for Trotters. On May 27, 1999, Manzi suffered serious injuries in a spill at Freehold Raceway. Andy Ray Miller (born September 7, 1968) is an American harness racing driver. Miller's nickname is "The Orange Crush." Biography Andy Miller, who was born in Mattoon, Illinois, started driving in 1985 on the Illinois fair circuit. By 1996, he had topped the $1 million mark in purses. Miller, who won driving titles at Balmoral and Maywood Parks in the 1990s, relocated to New Jersey along with his wife in 2006. Miller won his 5,000th race that same year. Ronald Pierce Ely (born June 21, 1938) is an American actor and novelist born in Hereford, Texas, and raised in Amarillo. Ely is best known for having portrayed Tarzan in the 1966–1968 NBC series ''Tarzan'' and for playing the lead role in the film '' Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze'' (1975). He hosted the ''Miss America'' pageant telecast in 1980 and 1981. Actor Ely won the role of Tarzan in 1966 after playing supporting roles in films such as '' South Pacific'' (1958), as an airplane navigator, ''The Fiend Who Walked the West'' (1958) and ''The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker'' (1959).
