William Pulteney (1624–1691)
Sir William Pulteney (25 March 1624 – 6 September 1691) was an English Member of Parliament. He represented Westminster from February 1679 to March 1681 and then from January 1689 until his death. Westminster was a parliamentary constituency in the Parliament of England to 1707, the Parliament of Great Britain 1707–1800 and the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801. It returned two members to 1885 and one thereafter. The constituency was first known to have been represented in Parliament in 1545 and continued to exist until the redistribution of seats in 1918. The constituency's most famous former representatives are John Stuart Mill and Charles James Fox. The most analogous contemporary constituency is Cities of London and Westminster. William Pulteney, 1st Earl Of Bath
William Pulteney, 1st Earl of Bath, (22 March 16847 July 1764) was a British Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1707 to 1742, when he was created the first Earl of Bath by King George II. Bath is sometimes stated to have been First Lord of the Treasury and British prime minister, for the shortest term ever (two days) in 1746, although most modern sources do not consider him to have held the office. Background and early career The son of William Pulteney by his first wife, Mary Floyd, he was born in March 1684 into an old Leicestershire family. He was educated at Westminster School and at Christ Church, Oxford, matriculating on 31 October 1700. He acquired extensive classical knowledge, and on leaving Oxford made the usual tour on the continent. Harry Pulteney
General Harry Pulteney (14 February 1686 – 26 October 1767) was an English soldier and Member of Parliament. He was the younger son of Colonel William Pulteney, of Misterton in Leicestershire, and Mary Floyd. His elder brother, William was one of the leading English statesmen of the 18th century and was eventually created Earl of Bath; he had inherited the family fortune including considerable estates in what is now central London, and also the parliamentary borough of Hedon in Yorkshire. Harry entered Parliament in as member for Hedon in 1722. His brother William had already been its MP for 17 years, and had offered the second seat to his cousin, Daniel Pulteney; but as Daniel was also elected for the (more prestigious) constituency of Preston, this left a vacancy which Harry was able to fill (William continuing to hold the other seat). John Pulteney
John Pulteney (before 1668 – 2 May 1726), of St James's, Westminster and Harefield, Middlesex, was an English lawyer and Whig politician who sat in the English and British House of Commons from 1695 to 1710. Early life Pulteney was the son of Sir William Pulteney, and his wife Grace Corbet, daughter of Sir John Corbet, 1st Baronet, of Stoke, Shropshire. He was educated at Westminster School under Dr Busby. He married before 1674 Lucy Colville of Northamptonshire. He was admitted at Inner Temple in 1676 and matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in 1677. He was called to the Bar in 1682. Career Pulteney was nominated as deputy-lieutenant of Middlesex in 1689. He had no previous experience in the higher levels of government when he was appointed by Lord Shrewsbury as under-secretary of the Southern Department in 1689, holding the post to June 1690. Daniel Pulteney
Daniel Pulteney (''c.'' 1684 – 7 September 1731) was an English government official and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1721 to 1731. Biography Pulteney was the son of John Pulteney (d. 1726), MP for Hastings and Commissioner of Customs, and Lucy Colville. He studied at Christ Church, Oxford, matriculating in 1699. He was one of the Commissioners for Trade and Plantations between July 1717 and October 1721. He entered Parliament in March 1721 as Member of Parliament for Tregony in Cornwall. In September he was appointed a Lord of the Admiralty, a post which he held until 1725. He was also later appointed Clerk of the Council in Ireland. At the general election of 1722, Pulteney was elected for two constituencies, Hedon (the Yorkshire borough owned by his cousin William Pulteney, who was its other MP) and Preston, which he chose to represent. (Henrietta) Laura Pulteney, 1st Countess of Bath (26 December 1766 – 14 July 1808) was a British peeress and heiress. Early life Born Henrietta Laura Johnstone in Westminster, she was the only child of the wealthy William Johnstone, later Sir William Pulteney, 5th Baronet, and his wife, Frances Pulteney, daughter of Daniel Pulteney. They moved to Bath House on Piccadilly, where she was raised. On her mother's death in 1782, she inherited the Pulteney estates. Initially educated at home, Pulteney was educated at the convent of Montparnasse in Paris, completing it in 1783. There she was visited by her kinswoman, the Countess of Hopetoun, her friend Lady Belmore and the Countess of Dundonald, the latter of whom introduced her to Parisian society.
