William Pugh (computer Scientist)
William Worthington Pugh Jr. (born 1960) is an American computer scientist who invented the skip list and the Omega test for deciding Presburger arithmetic. He was the co-author of the static code analysis tool FindBugs, and was highly influential in the development of the current memory model of the Java language. Pugh received a Ph.D. in computer science, with a minor in acting, from Cornell University. In 2012 he became professor emeritus of the University of Maryland's department of computer science in College Park. William Pugh (born 1994/1995) is a British game designer best known for his work on ''The Stanley Parable''. Early life and career William Pugh's parents are art teachers. He developed an interest in video games after playing a Nintendo 64 during a hospital visit when he was six. He studied at the Leeds College of Art for two weeks, but dropped out to work on video games. Pugh taught himself video game environment design through working on modifications, or mod (video gaming), mods, of video games by Valve Corporation, Valve. He made Level (video gaming), levels for ''Team Fortress 2'', campaigns for ''Left 4 Dead 2'', and puzzles in ''Portal (video game), Portal''. His work earned him a Saxxy Awards, Saxxy Award, a fan-voted award for ''Team Fortress 2''-based creations. William Pugh (geologist)
Sir William John Pugh (28 June 1892 – 18 March 1974) was a British geologist who was director of the Geological Survey of Great Britain and of the Museum of Practical Geology, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. He was born in Westbury, Shropshire, the only son of coal merchant John Pugh and educated at Welshpool County School and the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, where he graduated BA in Geography in 1914. However, he was inspired to study geology by Professor Owen Thomas Jones. In 1915, they presented their first joint study (of the geology of the area around Machynlleth) to the Geological Society of London. During World War I, he served with the Royal Welch Fusiliers as a staff officer, rising to the rank of major. He was awarded OBE in the 1919 New Year Honours, the French Croix de Guerre and was twice mentioned in despatches.
