William Popplewell Bloxam
William Popplewell Bloxam (9 January 1860 – 26 December 1913) was an English chemist known for his work on dyes, particularly indigo in India and at the laboratory of A.G. Perkin. He was nephew of the chemist Charles Loudon Bloxam. Bloxam was born on Mount Street, Grosvenor Square to surgeon William Bloxam and Emma Caroline Kite. He went to school at Northampton Grammar School and then King's College School. He was initially interested in studying law but the death of his father made him study chemistry from his uncle Charles Bloxam at King's College and became an assistant to Heinrich Debus (1824–1915) studying sulphur compounds and later under Vivian Lewes, both at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. In 1901 he applied for a position at the Madras Presidency College but this was cancelled when the former holder of the position returned from sick leave. Indigo
Indigo is a deep color close to the color wheel blue (a primary color in the RGB color space), as well as to some variants of ultramarine, based on the ancient dye of the same name. The word "indigo" comes from the Latin word ''indicum'', meaning "Indian", as the dye was originally exported to Europe from India. Grosvenor Square is a large garden square in the Mayfair district of London. It is the centrepiece of the Mayfair property of the Duke of Westminster, and takes its name from the duke's surname "Grosvenor". It was developed for fashionable residences in the 18th century. Northampton School for Boys (NSB) is a secondary school in Northampton, England. It was founded as Northampton Town and County Grammar School in 1541 by Thomas Chipsey, Mayor of Northampton. Heinrich Debus (chemist)
Heinrich Debus (13 July 1824 – 9 December 1915) was a German chemist. Education and career In 1838, he attended a trade school in Kassel, where he was taught by Robert Wilhelm Bunsen. He studied chemistry from 1845 to 1848 in Marburg, and served as Bunsen's assistant from 1847. In 1848, he earned his doctorate by investigating a red madder dye. He completed his habilitation in 1851 after Bunsen left for Breslau. At the suggestion of Frederick Augustus Genth, Debus was named Bunsen's successor at Marburg. Later in 1851 he left for England to be a chemistry teacher at Queenwood College followed from 1868 to 1870 by the position as Science Master at Clifton College, Bristol. He then taught at Guy's Hospital, London from 1870 until appointed foundation Professor of Chemistry in 1873 at the new Royal Naval College, Greenwich, where he remained until his retirement and return to Germany. Presidency College, Chennai
Presidency College is an art, commerce, and science college in the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India. On 16 October 1840, this school was established as the Madras Preparatory School before being repurposed as a high school, and then a graduate college. The Presidency College is one of the oldest government arts colleges in India. It is one of two Presidency Colleges established by the British in India, the other being the Presidency College, Kolkata. Indigo dye is an organic compound with a distinctive blue color.
