William P. Allen (trade Unionist)
William Philip Allen (11 November 1888 – 4 May 1958) was a British trade unionist. Born in Islington, Allen worked for the Great Northern Railway from 1907, initially as an engine cleaner. He became active in the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF), and served as its Hornsey branch secretary and on the national executive before winning election as the union's president in 1930, being re-elected in 1932 and 1933.''Railway Gazette International'', Vol.87, p.330 After his final term as president, Allen was employed as the union's organising secretary. He was promoted to assistant general secretary in 1936 before, in 1940, becoming general secretary. At the same time, he was elected to the General Council of the Trades Union Congress. The National Registration Act 1939 was an Act of Parliament in the United Kingdom. The initial National Registration Bill was introduced to Parliament as an emergency measure at the start of the World War II, Second World War. The Act provided for the establishment of a constantly-maintained National Register of the civilian population of the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man, and for the issuance of identity cards based on data held in the register, and required civilians to present their identity cards on demand to police officers and other authorised persons. Following the passing of the Act by Parliament on 5 September 1939, registrations and the issuing of identity cards commenced on 29 September. LNER Peppercorn Class A1
The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Peppercorn Class A1 is a type of express passenger steam locomotive. Forty-nine original Peppercorn Class A1s were built to the design of Arthur Peppercorn (who was the last Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of the LNER) during the early British Railways era, but all were scrapped with the discontinuation of steam, with none of the original production run surviving into preservation. In 2008, a brand new 50th Peppercorn A1 locomotive, 60163 ''Tornado'', was completed. The British Transport Commission (BTC) was created by Clement Attlee's post-war Labour government as a part of its nationalisation programme, to oversee railways, canals and road freight transport in Great Britain (Northern Ireland had the separate Ulster Transport Authority). Its general duty under the Transport Act 1947 was to provide an efficient, adequate, economical and properly integrated system of public inland transport and port facilities within Great Britain for passengers and goods, excluding transport by air.
