William N. Carrico Jr.
William "Bill" N. Carrico Jr. (born February 12, 1950) is an American computer scientist and businessman who founded several technology companies in Silicon Valley. He was the president and CEO of 3Com, senior vice president of Cisco Systems, and chairman of Packet Design. Education Carrico graduated from Santa Clara University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE). Career Carrico worked for Fairchild Semiconductor and Zilog. He and Judith Estrin co-founded Bridge Communications in 1981, which merged with 3Com in 1987. The couple joined Network Computing Devices in 1988. Network Computing Devices (NCD) was a company founded in 1987 to produce a new class of products now known as a thin client. It was founded in Mountain View, CA, and when it closed it was headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon. The corporate founders were Mike Harrigan, Doug Klein, Dave Cornelius, Ed Basart, Martin Eberhard, and Kevin Martin. At that time these devices were known as network terminals or X Terminals. Judith Estrin and William Carrico joined the company about 6 months after its founding as its new CEO and executive vice president, and led the company through its IPO in 1992.
