William McKinley Monument
The ''William McKinley Monument'', or ''McKinley Memorial'', is a statue and quotation array honoring the assassinated United States President William McKinley which stands in front of the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, Ohio. Created by Hermon Atkins MacNeil between 1903 and 1906, with the assistance of his wife Carol Brooks MacNeil, the Monument was dedicated in September 1907. Description The full-size statue of McKinley on a fifteen-foot pedestal is flanked by statues representing ''Peace'' and ''Prosperity''. Hermon Atkins MacNeil
Hermon Atkins MacNeil (February 27, 1866 – October 2, 1947) was an American sculptor born in Everett, Massachusetts. He is known for designing the ''Standing Liberty'' quarter, struck by the Mint from 1916-1930; and for sculpting ''Justice, the Guardian of Liberty'' on the east pediment of the United States Supreme Court building. Career MacNeil graduated from Massachusetts Normal Art School, now Massachusetts College of Art and Design, in 1886, became an instructor in industrial art at Cornell University from 1886 to 1889, and was then a pupil of Henri M. Chapu and Alexandre Falguière in Paris. Returning to America, he aided Philip Martiny (1858–1927) in the preparation of sketch models for the World's Columbian Exposition, and in 1896 he won the Rinehart scholarship, passing four years (1896–1900) in Rome. Carol Brooks MacNeil
Carol Brooks MacNeil (January 15, 1871 – June 22, 1944) was an American sculptor, born in Chicago where she studied at the Art Institute of Chicago under Lorado Taft. MacNeil modeled many charming and unique designs for vases, teapots, inkstands, and other decorative and useful objects, as well as children's busts, including those of her two sons, and statuettes. Life The daughter of a painter father, MacNeil chose instead to work in sculpture. MacNeil studied in Paris under Frederick William MacMonnies and Jean Antoine Injalbert. She was one of the " white rabbits" who worked for Lorado Taft at the World Columbian Exposition of 1893, along with other female artists including Helen F. Mears. In 1895, she married Hermon Atkins MacNeil, a sculptor of American Indians and heroic monuments. They had two sons, Claude A. MacNeil and Alden B. MacNeil. McKinley National Memorial
The McKinley National Memorial in Canton, Ohio, United States, is the final resting place of William McKinley, who served as the 25th president of the United States from 1897 to his assassination in 1901. Canton was a significant place in McKinley's life; he lived there, practiced as an attorney, and conducted his political campaigns from the town. Memorial Association, contributions Following McKinley's funeral, several of the his closest advisors, including George B. Cortelyou, William R. Day of Canton and Ohio Senator Mark Hanna, met to discuss the location of a proper memorial to serve as a final resting place for the former president.
