William McCleery (politician)
Sir William Victor McCleery (17 July 1887 – 30 October 1957) was a prominent Unionist in Northern Ireland. McCleery was the managing director of Hale, Martin and Company, and from 1921 until 1946 was the President of the Ballymoney Chamber of Commerce, from 1922 until 1945 was chair of the North Antrim Agricultural Association, and from 1931 to 1946 was President of the North Antrim Unionist Association. He was also the Grand Master of the Orange Order in County Antrim. McCleery was elected as the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) Member of Parliament for North Antrim at a by-election in 1945. In 1949, he briefly served as Minister of Labour, before becoming Minister of Commerce until 1953. In 1949, he was also appointed to the Privy Council of Northern Ireland. After being relieved of his ministerial post, he became chairman of the Unionist Back Bench Committee until 1956. He was knighted in 1954. Unionist (Ireland)
Unionism is a political tradition on the island of Ireland that favours political union with Great Britain and professes loyalty to the British Crown and constitution. As the overwhelming sentiment of Ireland's Protestant minority, following Catholic Emancipation (1829) unionism mobilised to keep Ireland part of the United Kingdom and to defeat the efforts of Irish nationalists to restore a separate Irish parliament. Phelim O'Neill, 2nd Baron Rathcavan
Phelim Robert Hugh O'Neill, 2nd Baron Rathcavan, PC (NI) (2 November 1909 – 20 December 1994), was a politician in Northern Ireland and a hereditary peer in the British House of Lords. The son of Hugh O'Neill, a unionist politician, Phelim studied at Eton College before joining the Royal Artillery. He became a major during World War II. O'Neill was elected to Westminster for the Ulster Unionist Party at the 1952 North Antrim by-election, succeeding his father. He stood down at the 1959 general election. At the 1958 Stormont elections, he was elected, again to represent North Antrim. In 1969, he briefly served as Minister of Education before becoming the Minister of Agriculture. In 1958, he was appointed High Sheriff of Antrim. O'Neill joined the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland in 1972, and acted as its leader at the Darlington Conference. The title of Knight Bachelor is the basic rank granted to a man who has been knighted by the monarch but not inducted as a member of one of the organised orders of chivalry; it is a part of the British honours system. Ulster (; ga, Ulaidh or ''Cúige Uladh'' ; sco, label= Ulster Scots, Ulstèr or ''Ulster'') is one of the four traditional Irish provinces. George Anthony Clark
Sir George Anthony Clark, 3rd Baronet, DL (24 January 1914 – 20 February 1991) was an Orangeman and unionist politician in Northern Ireland. The son of Sir George Clark, 2nd Baronet, of Dunlambert, Clark studied at Canford School before becoming a farmer and company director. At the 1938 Northern Ireland general election, he was elected for the Ulster Unionist Party in Belfast Dock, although he lost his seat at the 1945 general election. During World War II, he served as a captain in the Black Watch, and in 1951, he succeeded as the 3rd Baronet. Clark was elected to the Senate of Northern Ireland in 1951, serving until 1969, and acting as a Deputy Speaker from 1957 until 1959. In 1954, he was appointed High Sheriff of Antrim. In 1957, he became Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, filling the position for ten years.
