William Mathews (cricketer)
William Mathews (born 23 March 1793 at Crondall, Hampshire; died 20 August 1858 at Woodbridge, Suffolk) was an English professional cricketer who played first-class cricket from 1821 to 1830. He was mainly associated with Surrey county cricket teams, Surrey and made 31 known appearances in first-class matches. Mathews took part in the Gentlemen v Players matches between 1824 and 1830, usually representing the Players, but in 1825, he was a given man for the Gentlemen. He played for All-England Eleven, All-England in the 1827 roundarm trial matches and was one of the signatories to the petition after the second game that called upon the authorities to ban roundarm bowling, roundarm.Altham, p.61-62. William Mathews (mountaineer)
William Mathews (1828–1901) was an English mountaineer, botanist, land agent and surveyor, who first proposed the formation of the Alpine Club of London in 1857. Early life He was the eldest of six sons of Jeremiah Mathews, a Worcestershire land agent, and his wife Mary Guest. Of his brothers, Charles Edward Mathews (1834–1905) and George Spencer Mathews (1836–1904) were also noted mountaineers. William was educated at St John's College, Cambridge. Founding of the Alpine Club Mathews had corresponded with F. J. A. Hort about the idea of founding a national mountaineering club in February 1857 and took the idea up with E. S. Kennedy on an ascent of the Finsteraarhorn on 13 August 1857 (the fifth ascent of the mountain and the first British ascent). Ad hoc meetings at Mathews's house near Birmingham proceeded during November, and the meeting at which the Alpine Club was founded took place on 22 December 1857 at Ashley's Hotel in London, chaired by Kennedy. William Gordon Mathews
William Gordon Mathews (February 26, 1877 – 1923) was a Federal judge and lawyer from Charleston, West Virginia, serving as Referee in Bankruptcy for Kanawha, West Virginia 1898-1908, and Clerk of the Court for Kanawha 1903-1904. Life William Gordon Mathews was born on February 26, 1877, in Lewisburg, West Virginia, to Lucy Fry and Henry Mason Mathews. His family was politically prominent in the Virginias. His father was governor of West Virginia, and his maternal grandfather, Joseph L. Fry, was a West Virginia judge. Mathews was educated at the Lewisburg Military Academy. In 1895 he enrolled in Georgetown Law School for one year, afterward completing his degree at the University of Virginia School of Law, graduating in 1897 at 20 years of age. He was a member of the fraternities Phi Delta Phi and Phi Delta Theta. In 1897 he moved to Charleston, Kanawha County, and was admitted to the Bar. He married Helen B. Davis in 1903. William Shirley Mathews
William Shirley Mathews was an Osage politician who served in several positions of Osage Nation government. He served as the Osage Nation treasurer between 1882 and 1886, chief justice between 1890 and 1892, and prosecuting attorney between 1894 and 1896, as well as on the tribal council from 1910 and 1912. He was also the father of John Joseph Mathews. Early life and career William Shirley Mathews was born on September 15, 1848, in Fort Gibson, Creek Nation, Indian Territory, to John Allen Mathews and Sarah Williams (1816–1856), the daughter of William S. Williams and his Osage wife A-Ci'n-Ga. He was educated by Jesuits at the Osage Mission's post in St. Paul, Kansas. During the American Civil War, his father was a Confederate guerilla. William Henry Mathews (1919–2003) was a Canadian geologist, volcanologist, engineer, and professor. He is considered a pioneer in the study of subglacial eruptions and volcano-ice interactions in North America. Many of his publications continue to be regarded as classics in their field. Biography Bill Mathews was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1919. His mother and a brother died when he was two; his father, Vancouver pioneer Thomas Mathews, died when he was 13. Mathews attended King George Secondary School before entering the University of British Columbia in 1935, earning a Bachelor of Applied Science in geological engineering in 1940, followed by a Master of Applied Science with a major in petrology and a minor in physics in 1941.
