William Marshall (Australian Politician)
William Mortimer Marshall (22 June 1885 – 19 August 1952) was an Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1921 until his death, representing the seat of Murchison. He served as a minister in the government of Frank Wise. Marshall was born in North Creswick, Victoria, a small town near Ballarat. His work as a miner took him to Malaya and Rhodesia, and eventually to Western Australia, where he was employed on the mines at Lawlers and Youanmi. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. The party or coalition that can command a majority in the Legislative Assembly is invited by the Governor to form a government. 1921 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 12 March 1921 to elect all 50 members to the Legislative Assembly. The incumbent government, led by Premier James Mitchell of the Nationalist Party and supported by the Country Party and National Labor Party, won a second term in government against the Labor Party opposition, led by Opposition Leader Philip Collier. At this election Edith Cowan became the first woman elected to any Australian parliament. Results : 164,688 electors were enrolled to vote at the election, but 6 of the 50 seats were uncontested, with 17,740 electors enrolled in those seats. Of these, 3 were held by Labor, 2 by the Country Party and 1 was held by the National Labor Party. Harrie Seward
Harrie Stephen Seward (26 February 1884 – 23 July 1958) was an Australian politician. The brother of Leo Seward, and the son Stephen Seward (1853-1923), and Mary Ellen Seward (?1849-1935), née Kelleher, Harrie Stephen Seward was born at Rochester, Victoria. He was educated in Ballarat at St Patrick's College. He became a bank officer, and moved to Western Australia, becoming a farmer at Pingelly from 1913. He served in the military 1915–1919. In 1933 he was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly as the Country Party member for Pingelly, serving as Minister for Railways and Transport from 1947 until 1948. Hubert Parker
Hubert Stanley Wyborn Parker DSO VD (16 October 1883—26 July 1966) was an Australian politician who represented the Western Australian Legislative Assembly seat of North-East Fremantle from 1930 until 1933, and one of the three Legislative Council seats for Metropolitan-Suburban Province (later known as Suburban Province) from 1934 until 1954. He was a member of the Nationalist Party until 1945, when the party merged into the Liberal Party. Bob Marshall (billiards Player)
Robert James Percival Marshall, OAM (10 April 1910 – 23 February 2004) was a noted Australian amateur player of English billiards. He won the World Amateur Billiards Championship in 1936, 1938, 1951 and 1962 and was runner-up three times, as well as a national snooker champion. Marshall was born in Kalgoorlie, the same town as another legend of the game, Walter Lindrum. Throughout his career he was compared favourably with Lindrum who, in 1954, himself declared that Marshall was one of the greatest amateur players he had ever seen. Ten years later, the contemporary English snooker professional Fred Davis said of Marshall, "Most noticeable about his style is his compactness, so like Walter Lindrum, and the shortness of his back-swing, hardly more than a couple of inches." 1947 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 15 March 1947 to elect all 50 members to the Legislative Assembly. The result was a hung parliament—the four-term Labor government, led by Premier Frank Wise, was defeated with a swing of approximately 7%. The Liberal-Country Coalition won exactly half of the seats, one short of a majority, needed the support of the Independent members Harry Shearn and William Read to govern. The election was the Liberal Party's first major showing since its formation in 1944-1945 out of the former Nationalist Party.
