William M.K. Olcott
William Morrow Knox Olcott (August 27, 1862 – May 10, 1933) was an American lawyer and politician from New York City. Early life He was born on August 27, 1862, in New York City to John N. Olcott and Euphemia Helen Knox. Future Congressman J. Van Vechten Olcott and mining engineer Eben Erskine Olcott were his brothers. He graduated from City College in 1881, and from Columbia Law School in 1883. Career He practiced law and entered politics as a Republican. In November 1893, he ran for judge of the New York City Court, but was defeated. He was a member of the Board of Aldermen from January 1895 until his appointment as New York County District Attorney He was appointed New York County District Attorney in December 1896 to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John R. The New York County District Attorney, also known as the Manhattan District Attorney, is the elected district attorney for New York County (Manhattan), New York (state), New York. Robert Anderson Van Wyck ( ;Paumgarten, Nick"The Van Wyck Question" ''The New Yorker'', June 11, 2001. Accessed September 12, 2008. Early life and education Robert Anderson Van Wyck was the son of William Van Wyck and Lydia Ann Maverick. He was one of seven children, including two brothers Augustus and Samuel Maverick, a Confederate Regimental Surgeon. He studied at the Wilson Academy in North Carolina, and later graduated from Columbia University, where he was valedictorian of his class. Edward Swann
Edward Swann (March 10, 1862 – September 19, 1945) was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician from New York. From November 4, 1902 to March 3, 1903, he served part of one term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Life He was born on March 10, 1862, in Madison, Florida. Swann graduated from Columbia Law School in 1886, was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in New York City. He entered politics as a member of Tammany Hall. Congress Swann was elected as a Democrat to the 57th United States Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Amos J. Cummings and served from December 1, 1902, to March 3, 1903. 1904 Republican National Convention
The 1904 Republican National Convention was held in the Chicago Coliseum, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, on June 21 to June 23, 1904. The popular President Theodore Roosevelt had easily ensured himself of the nomination; a threat had come from the Old Guard favourite Ohio Senator Mark Hanna, the loyal kingmaker in Republican politics, but he died early in 1904, which ended any opposition to Roosevelt within the Republican Party. There were also very informal talks with future president William Howard Taft about trying for the nomination, but Taft refused these motions as evidenced by a letter to Henry Hoyt, the Solicitor General, in 1903.
