William Lewis (MP For Anglesey)
William Lewis (1526-1601?) was an MP for Anglesey. Early life He was the first son of Hugh Lewis of Presaddfed Hall and his mother was Agnes, daughter of Sir William Gruffydd of Penrhyn. Between the deaths of his father and grandfather he was the ward of John Puleston. Career Offices held He was Sheriff of Anglesey in 1548–9, 1557-8 and 1571–2. He was commissioner of relief in 1550. He was commissioner of goods of churches and fraternities in 1553. Official records He makes few appearances in official records until the reign of Edward VI, though later records show he leases of lands to him in Anglesey started before the end of the reign of Henry VII. He was a plaintiff in the Star Chamber against Richard and Thomas Bulkeley concerning the making of a mill dam. The dispute was part of a developing row between Lewis and Sir Richard Bulkeley. William Lewis (athlete)
William Fraser Lewis (March 2, 1876 – March 1, 1962) was an American track and field athlete who competed at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Lewis competed in the 110 metre hurdles. He placed third in his first-round heat and second in his repechage heat, not qualifying for the final. In the 200 metre hurdles, Lewis placed fifth in his semifinal heat and did not qualify for the final. Lewis refused to take part in the final of the 400 metre hurdles, as the final was held on a Sunday. Having qualified for the final by taking second in his semifinal heat, this left Lewis in fourth place overall. William Thomas Lewis (1748?–1811), known as "Gentleman" Lewis, due to his refined acting style, was an English actor. He was said to be "the most complete fop on the stage". In later life he went into theatrical management. Early days in Ireland The son of William Lewis, a linendraper on Tower Hill, London, later an actor and manager in Ireland, he was born at Ormskirk, Lancashire, in or about 1748 (there is disagreement about his birth date); he had a Welsh clerical background, and was rumoured to be a great-grandson of Erasmus Lewis. William T. Lewis ''(né'' Willie Meria Tawlton Lewis; 10 June 1905 – 13 January 1971) was an American jazz clarinetist and bandleader. Career Lewis was born Cleburne, Texas, United States. He grew up in Dallas and played in variety shows as a teen. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music, then played in Will Marion Cook's orchestra. When Cook's band was taken over by Sam Wooding, Lewis traveled with him on his tours of Europe, South America, and North Africa, remaining until Wooding disbanded the orchestra in 1931. Following this Lewis set up his own band, Willie Lewis and His Entertainers, which featured some of Wooding's old players and played to great success in Europe. Among those who played under Lewis were Herman Chittison, Benny Carter, Bill Coleman, Garnet Clark, Bobby Martin, and June Cole. Lewis's Entertainers recorded for French label Disques Swing. William L. Lewis (born November 23, 1931 in Tulsa, Oklahoma) is an American operatic tenor and academic. Biography William Lewis was educated at the University of Colorado, Texas Christian University and New York University. He began his career as a writer and an athlete before deciding to pursue a career in opera. He began his voice training under Karl Kritz and Arthur Faguy Coté in Fort Worth, followed by studies with Susan Seton and Hulda and Luigi Rossini in New York. In the summer of 1951 he attended the Music Academy of the West. He made his professional opera debut in 1953 with Fort Worth Opera as Rinuccio in Puccini's ''Gianni Schicchi''. Two years later he won the Metropolitan Opera's ''Audition of the Air'' competition (precursor to the National Council Auditions). He is currently the Director of Player Personnel for the San Antonio Brahmas of the XFL and was most recently the Assistant Director of Pro Personnel for the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL. He was the general manager for the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football (AAF). He previously served as an executive in the National Football League (NFL) for 20 years, including tenures with the Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs. Most notably, he was the Seahawks vice president of football operations from 2010 to 2012. William Lewis (1787–1870) was an English chess player and author, nowadays best known for the Lewis Countergambit. He may have been the first player ever described as a Grandmaster of the game. Life and works Born in Birmingham, William Lewis moved as a young man to London where he worked for a merchant for a short period. He became a student of chess player Jacob Sarratt, but in later years he showed himself to be rather ungrateful towards his teacher. Although he considered Sarratt's ''Treatise on the Game of Chess'' (1808) a "poorly written book", in 1822 Lewis published a second edition of it three years after Sarratt's death in direct competition with Sarratt's own superior revision published posthumously in 1821 by Sarratt's poverty-stricken widow. William Lewis (football)
William Lewis (September 1860 – 6 May 1916) was an English football referee, director, secretary and manager, active in the early 20th century. He managed Brentford and Chelsea, the latter in the Football League. Managerial career Brentford Lewis was named secretary-manager of Southern League Second Division club Brentford in 1900 and led them to the title and promotion to the Southern League First Division in the 1900–01 season. The Bees finished second-from-bottom in their first season in the First Division, but held onto their status in the league after a relegation playoff with Grays United was called off before going into extra time. Brentford finished bottom of the First Division in 1902–03, but once again held onto their place in the league after a 7–2 relegation playoff victory over West London rivals Fulham.
