William Lawrence Coke
Brigadier W.L. Coke OBE, CD, MD (5 April 1905 – 12 August 1989) was the 16th Canadian Surgeon General. Biography Born in Watford, Ontario, William L. was educated at the University of Western Ontario, where he graduated with a medical degree in 1928. Following medical school, Coke joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps (RCAMC) as a lieutenant in 1929. He was promoted to captain in 1930, major in 1935 and lieutenant-colonel in 1940. As a lieutenant-colonel, Coke was posted to 10th Field Ambulance in 1940 and was sent overseas with the unit that same year. He remained with the 10th until 1943; at which time, he was transferred to the Mediterranean with the Canadian Army. In 1942, he was next posted to the 24th Canadian Field Ambulance, as Commanding Officer, while it was stationed at Camp Aldershot, in England. The Surgeon General ( French: ''médecin-général'') is the professional head of the Canadian military health jurisdiction, the adviser to the Minister of National Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff on all matters related to health, and head of the Royal Canadian Medical Service. The Surgeon General may also be appointed the commander of the Canadian Forces Health Services Group, which fulfils all military health system functions from education and clinical services to research and public health. It consists of the Royal Canadian Medical Service, the Royal Canadian Dental Corps, personnel from other branches of the armed forces, and civilians, with health professionals from over 45 occupations and specialties in over 125 units and detachments across Canada and abroad. Warwick, Ontario
Warwick is a rural township in Lambton County, Ontario, Canada, with a population (2016) of 3,692. Bisected by the Egremont Road that was surveyed to link London with the Lake Huron shoreline in 1832, the township began to attract settlers including those helped by charitable organizations, such as Lord Sheffield's Petworth settlers, and retired soldiers from the British Army. A village by the same name was surveyed within the township where Bear Creek crossed the Egremont. The larger village of Watford was established to the southeast of Warwick Village when the Great Western Railway was established in the 1850s. Watford became an incorporated village in 1873 while parts of Warwick were removed for municipal purposes when the villages of Forest and Arkona were incorporated in the 1870s. Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps
The Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps (RCAMC) was an administrative corps of the Canadian Army. The Militia Medical Service was established in 1898. It consisted of an Army Medical Service (officers) and an Army Medical Corps (other ranks). Sir F.W. Borden was appointed Honorary Colonel of the militia's "Canadian Army Medical Corps" on 1 August 1901. The regimental medical personnel of the Permanent Active Militia were absorbed into the corps on 2 July 1904. The regular component was titled the "Permanent Active Militia Medical Corps" (PAMC) and the militia component was titled the "Army Medical Corps" (AMC). As the origin of a permanent medical corps, this date has since been considered the "birth" of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps for purposes of seniority among the corps of the Canadian Army, coming after the Royal Army Service Corps, 1903.
