William LaBarthe Steele
William LaBarthe Steele (May 2, 1875 – March 4, 1949) was an American architect from Chicago, Illinois. He is considered a principal member of the Prairie School Architectural Movement during the early 20th century. Career After graduating from the University of Illinois, Steele worked under renowned architect Louis Sullivan in Chicago, Illinois from 1897 to 1900. He later moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he worked at several firms. In 1904, he settled in Sioux City, Iowa, where he stayed for 25 years until moving to Omaha, Nebraska in 1929. Around this time, he and Thomas Rogers Kimball founded an architectural firm that eventually became Steele, Sandham, and Steele. He designed over 250 commercial buildings, churches, synagogues, homes, schools, and government buildings in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Nebraska Board Of Engineers And Architects
In 1937, the Nebraska State Board of Examiners for Professional Engineers and Architects (currently called the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects) was established to review the qualifications of individuals seeking to practice engineering or architecture in the State of Nebraska and license individuals who were deemed competent. The Board also upholds and updates the Engineers and Architects Regulation Act which governors all laws related to architecture and engineering. Creation By 1937, many states in the United States had already created some kind of architecture of engineering board, with Illinois having the first architecture board in 1897 and Wyoming having the first engineering board in 1907. Sacred Heart Hospital (Le Mars, Iowa)
Sacred Heart Hospital, also known as the Floyd Valley Apartments, is a historic building located in Le Mars, Iowa, United States. Construction of the building began in 1921. It was designed by Sioux City architect William Steele and Riesche & Sanborn was the contractor. The five-story brick structure was completed two years later for $350,000. The Sisters of St. Francis from Dubuque operated the hospital for the next 43 years. In addition to the hospital, the building also housed Sacred Heart Nursing School from 1923 to 1938. On December 1, 1966, the City of Le Mars took over the operation of the hospital, which was renamed Floyd Valley Hospital at that time. They continued to use the Sacred Heart building. The First Congregational Church, also known as Iglesia Pentecostes Evangelica Principe de Paz, is a house of worship located in Sioux City, Iowa, United States. The Davidson Building is a historic building located in Sioux City, Iowa, United States. It was constructed by local businessmen and real estate developers Ben and Dave Davidson. They saw the need for an upscale office building for professionals. They hired prominent local architect William L. Steele to design the Early Commercial-style structure. with It was built by the leading contractor in the city, Lytle Construction Company. Completed in 1913, it was Sioux City's first office building. The exterior of the L-shaped, six-story building is composed of terra cotta panels separated by vertical bands of Roman style brick, and capped with an ornate cornice.
