William J. Greenman House
The William J. Greenman House is a historic home located at Cortland in Cortland County, New York. It was built in 1896, and based on a pattern book plan by architect George Franklin Barber. It is a 2½-story, Queen Anne-style frame dwelling. It is sheathed in clapboard and sits on a stone foundation. It features exuberant wood trim, decorative shingles and half-timbering; a wraparound porch with a circular section topped by a bell-shaped roof; and projecting bay windows. Also on the property is a contributing carriage house. Cortland is a city and the county seat of Cortland County, New York. Known as the Crown City, Cortland is in New York's Southern Tier region. As of the 2020 census it had a population of 17,556. The city of Cortland, near the county's western border, is surrounded by the town of Cortlandville. History The city is within the former Central New York Military Tract. It is named after Pierre Van Cortlandt, the first lieutenant governor of New York. George Franklin Barber
George Franklin Barber (July 31, 1854 – February 17, 1915) was an American architect known for the house designs he marketed worldwide through mail-order catalogs. Barber was one of the most successful residential architects of the late Victorian period in the United States,Michael Tomlan, Introduction to George F. Barber's ''Victorian Cottage Architecture: An American Catalog of Designs, 1891'' (Dover Publications, 2004), pp. v-xvi. and his plans were used for houses in all 50 U.S. states, and in nations as far away as Japan and the Philippines. Queen Anne Style Architecture In The United States
Queen Anne style architecture was one of a number of popular Victorian architectural styles that emerged in the United States during the period from roughly 1880 to 1910. Popular there during this time, it followed the Second Empire and Stick styles and preceded the Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles. Sub-movements of Queen Anne include the Eastlake movement. The style bears almost no relationship to the original Queen Anne style architecture in Britain (a toned-down version of English Baroque that was used mostly for gentry houses) which appeared during the time of Queen Anne, who reigned from 1702 to 1714, nor of Queen Anne Revival (which appeared in the latter 19th century there).
