William Howard Stovall
William Howard Stovall (18 February 1895 – 11 May 1970) was a WW1 flying ace and distinguished cotton farmer, who also served in WW2. He began his military career as a World War I pilot credited with six aerial victories and achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. He went on to become a successful businessman before serving in World War II. On the latter occasion, he served once again with fellow aerial combat veterans from World War I, Frank O'Driscoll Hunter and Carl Spaatz , rising to colonel. He also suffered the loss of his namesake son in aerial battle. Upon return from the war, Stovall won awards for his agricultural expertise. He died in his sleep at home, aged 75. Stovall, Mississippi
Stovall, also known as Prarieville, is an unincorporated community in Coahoma County, Mississippi, United States, along Mississippi Highway 1, north of Sherard and approximately south of Friars Point. History Stovall is named after the Stovall family, who owned the land where the railroad depot was located. It is located on the former Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad and in 1910 was home to two general stores. The Stovall Gin Company once operated a cotton gin in Stovall. Although Stovall is unincorporated, it has a ZIP code of 38614. A post office operated under the name Prarieville from 1878 to 1885 and began operating under the name Stovall in 1885. Frank O'Driscoll Hunter
Frank O'Driscoll Hunter (December 8, 1894 – June 25, 1982) was a World War I flying ace, being credited by the United States Army Air Service with downing nine enemy aircraft. Hunter became an advocate of fighter aircraft strategy and tactics. In World War II he served as commanding general of the VIII Fighter Command and, later, the First Air Force. Early career Hunter was born in Savannah, Georgia on December 8, 1894. He was educated at Hotchkiss School, Connecticut, and in Lausanne, Switzerland. He enlisted in the Aviation Section, Signal Reserve, as a flying cadet on May 18, 1917. World War I service He went to France in September 1917 and received further training at the 3rd Aviation Instruction Center at Issoudun, France.
