William Henry Adams
William Henry Adams (1809 – 29 August 1865) was a British politician (Conservative Party), lawyer and colonial judge. His final appointment was as Chief Justice of Hong Kong. Early life Adams was born in 1809 and was the son of Thomas Adams of Norman Cross, Huntingdonshire. While still a boy he entered a printing office as a compositor. He read law in his spare time and in 1843 was called to the bar of the Middle Temple. He also worked as a law reporter for the ''Morning Herald''. Political career Adams was elected unopposed at the 1857 general election as one of the two members of parliament (MPs) for Boston in Lincolnshire, having contested the seat unsuccessfully at the 1852 general election and at a by-election in 1856. He was re-elected unopposed in February 1859 at a by-election following his appointment as Recorder of Derby, but did not stand again at the general election in April 1859. Benjamin Bond Cabbell
Benjamin Bond Cabbell FRS FSA FGS DL (1782/83 – 9 December 1874), was a British politician and philanthropist. Life He was educated at Westminster School in London. He studied at Oriel College, Oxford from June 1800, but left the university in 1803 without a degree. Instead he trained as a lawyer through apprenticeship. He was called to the bar of the Middle Temple in 1816 and practised on the western circuit. He was a magistrate for Norfolk, Middlesex, and Westminster. Cabbell was elected a fellow of the Royal Society on 19 January 1837. Cabbell was Conservative Party Member of Parliament for St Albans from August 1846 to July 1847, and then for Boston until he retired in March 1857. He was Deputy Lieutenant of Middlesex in 1852, and High Sheriff of Norfolk in 1854. Thomas Chisholm Anstey
Thomas Chisholm Anstey (1816 – 12 August 1873) was an English lawyer and one of the first Catholic parliamentarians in the nineteenth century. He served as Attorney General of Hong Kong for 4 years. He also wrote pamphlets on legal and political topics, particularly those relevant to Roman Catholics. Early life He was the second son of Thomas Anstey (1777–1851) and his wife Mary Turnbull, born in Kentish Town, London. In 1823, his father, a lawyer who had gone into commerce, moved to Tasmania, and he followed in 1827 with his elder brother George Alexander (1814–1895). In his early education he studied Hebrew with the minister James Garrett. Anstey returned to England, intending to take up law, and was educated at school in Wellington, Somerset and at University College London. John Jackson Smale
Sir John Jackson Smale (1 March 1805 – 13 August 1882) was a British lawyer and judge. He served as Attorney General and the longest-serving Chief Justice of Hong Kong. Early life Smale was born on 1 March 1805 in Devon, England. He was the son of John Smale. He studied in Manchester and the Inner Temple. He was admitted by the Inner Temple in 1828 but then qualified and practised as a solicitor. He was called to the bar of the Inner Temple in 1842. He practised at the Chancery Bar for eleven years from 1846 to 1857 and was noted as a law reporter, being one of the joint authors of "De Gex and Smale" (''Reports of Cases decided in the High Court of Chancery, by Knight-Bruce, V.C., and Parker, V.C.'', 1849–1853, 5 vols., with John Peter De Gex), and "Smale and Gifford". Meaburn Staniland
Meaburn Staniland (1809–1898) was a British Liberal Party politician. Life He was the son of James Staniland, educated at Lincoln Grammar School. He was a solicitor at Boston, Lincolnshire, senior partner in the firm Staniland & Wigglesworth. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Boston at the 1859 general election, but was narrowly defeated at the 1865 general election. An election petition led in 1866 to the result being overturned: his opponent Thomas Parry was unseated, and the seat awarded to Staniland. Staniland resigned from House of Commons on 8 March 1867 by becoming Steward of the Manor of Northstead.
