William Heartz Brown
William Heartz Brown (February 25, 1883 – May 24, 1967) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Yarmouth in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1949 to 1956. He was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia. Brown was born in 1883 at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. He married Etta May, and was employed as a superintendent at a textile plant. He served on town council in Yarmouth from 1948 to 1952. Brown entered provincial politics in the 1949 election, winning the dual-member Yarmouth riding with Liberal Donald J. Fraser. He was re-elected in the 1953 election, serving with Progressive Conservative Raymond Z. Bourque. Yarmouth, Nova Scotia
Yarmouth is a town in southwestern Nova Scotia, Canada. A port town, industries include fishing, and tourism. It is the terminus of a ferry service to Bar Harbor, Maine, run by Bay Ferries. History Originally inhabited by the Mi'kmaq, the region was known as "Keespongwitk" meaning "Lands End" due to its position at the tip of the Nova Scotia peninsula. European settlement The region was visited in 1604 by Samuel de Champlain, who named it "Cap-Fourchu", meaning "forked or cloven cape." The first Europeans to make a settlement on these shores were the French Acadians. They set up a small fishing settlement known as "Tebouque" in the mid 1600s and by 1750 the population was 50 people. 1956 Nova Scotia General Election
The 1956 Nova Scotia general election was held on 30 October 1956 to elect members of the 46th House of Assembly of the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It was won by the Progressive Conservatives led by Robert Stanfield. This was the first election the Liberals had fought after the death of their longtime charismatic leader, Angus L. Macdonald. Public Health Minister Harold Connolly became interim leader and premier following Macdonald's death in 1954, but was defeated at a leadership convention by Education Minister Henry Hicks. The convention exposed a sharp religious divide in the Liberal Party; Hicks was a Protestant and Connolly was a Catholic.
