William Hardin Harrison
William Hardin Harrison (born July 2, 1933) is a retired lieutenant general in the United States Army. He is a former commander of the I Corps at Fort Lewis, a post which he served from 1987 to 1989. He is also a former commander of the Sixth United States Army at the Presidio of San Francisco, and 7th Infantry Division and Fort Ord. After his retirement from the Army, he became the first mayor of Lakewood, Washington. Personal life Harrison was born on July 2, 1933 in Pembroke, Kentucky. He attained a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from William Jewell College and a Master of Science degree in Public Administration from Shippensburg State College. Military career Harrison entered the United States Army in 1954 as an infantryman. He attended basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. I Corps (United States)
I Corps is a corps of the United States Army headquartered in Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. It is a major formation of United States Army Pacific (USARPAC) and its current mission involves administrative oversight of Army units in the Asia-Pacific region, including the Pacific Pathways program. Activated in World War I in France, I Corps oversaw US Army divisions as they repelled several major German offensives and advanced into Germany. The corps was deactivated following the end of the war. Reactivated for service in World War II, the corps took command of divisions in the south Pacific, leading US and Australian Army forces as they pushed the Japanese army out of New Guinea. National Infantry Museum
The National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center is a museum located in Columbus, Georgia, just outside the Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning. The 190,000-square-foot museum opened in June 2009. The museum chronicles the history of the United States Army Infantry from the American Revolution to current operations. The Air Assault Badge, U.S. Army Institute of Heraldry, dated 18 January 1978, last accessed 16 October 2020 is awarded by the U.S. Army for successful completion of the Air Assault School. The course includes three phases of instruction involving U.S. Army rotary wing aircraft: combat air assault operations; rigging and slingloading operations; and rappelling from a helicopter. The Parachutist Badge, also commonly referred to as "Jump Wings" is a military badge of the United States Armed Forces. The Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB) is a United States Army military decoration. The badge is awarded to infantrymen and Special Forces soldiers in the rank of colonel and below, who fought in active ground combat while assigned as members of either an Infantry or Special Forces unit of brigade size or smaller at any time after 6 December 1941. The Commendation Medal is a mid-level United States military decoration presented for sustained acts of heroism or meritorious service. Each branch of the United States Armed Forces issues its own version of the Commendation Medal, with a fifth version existing for acts of joint military service performed under the Department of Defense. The United States Army War College (USAWC) is a U.S. Army educational institution in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, on the 500-acre (2 km2) campus of the historic Carlisle Barracks. The II Corps was a corps-sized formation of the United States Army that was active in both World War I and World War II. It was originally formed and fought on the Western Front during World War I and was also the first American formation of any size to see combat in North Africa or Europe during World War II.
