William Haines (Australian Politician)
William Clark Haines (10 January 1810 – 3 February 1866), Australian colonial politician, was the first Premier of Victoria. Haines was born in London, the son of John Haines, a physician. He was educated at Charterhouse School and Caius College, Cambridge, where he graduated in medicine; he later practiced surgery for several years. In 1835 he married Mary Dugard, with whom he had nine children. Haines migrated to the Port Phillip District (later Victoria) in 1841 and settled in the Geelong area. He farmed in the area as well as practising as a surgeon. He was appointed a member of the Victorian Legislative Council (then a partly elected, partly appointive body) in 1851, and in 1853 he was elected for district of Grant. Premier Of Victoria
The premier of Victoria is the head of government in the Australian state of Victoria. The premier is appointed by the governor of Victoria, and is the leader of the political party able to secure a majority in the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Responsible government came to the colony of Victoria in 1855. Between 1856 and 1892, the head of the government was commonly called the premier or the prime minister, but neither title had any legal basis. The head of government always held another portfolio, usually Chief Secretary or Treasurer, for which they were paid a salary. The first head of government to hold the title of premier without holding another portfolio was William Shiels in 1892. Premiers of Victoria who have served for more than 3,000 days have a statue installed at Treasury Place. Robert Stirling Hore Anderson
Robert Stirling Hore Anderson, MLC (1821 – 26 October 1883) was an Irish-born solicitor and Australian colonial (Victorian) parliamentarian. Anderson was born at Articlave near Coleraine, County Londonderry, Ireland, and was educated at the Belfast Academy and at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated B.A., 1845. After practising as a solicitor in Dublin for eight years he emigrated, and arrived in Victoria in June 1854. Whilst practising as a solicitor in Melbourne he resided in the suburb of Emerald Hill, and was Chairman of the Municipal Council. Anderson represented South Melbourne (October 1858 until its abolition in August 1859) and Emerald Hill (October 1859 to August 1864) in the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Benjamin Williams (Australian Politician)
Benjamin Williams (January 1, 1751July 20, 1814) was the 11th and 14th Governor of the U.S. state of North Carolina, from 1799 to 1802 and from 1807 to 1808. He was the first of two North Carolina Governors since the American Revolution to serve nonconsecutive terms. Biography Williams was born in Johnston County, North Carolina, in 1751, and became a farmer. He married Elizabeth Jones on August 10, 1781; they had one son named Benjamin. Williams served as a member of the revolutionary convention in Johnston County in 1774; he then served in the North Carolina Provincial Congress and two terms in the Provincial Council. In 1775, Williams was appointed to the Second North Carolina Regiment; he served until 1781, was promoted to the rank of colonel, and fought at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Robert Turnbull (Australian Politician)
Robert Turnbull (c.1819 – 21 November 1872) was a merchant and politician in colonial Victoria (Australia), and a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Life and career Turnbull was born in East Lothian, Scotland, and moved to the Port Phillip District in 1840 via Van Diemens Land having arrived there in 1839 in the ship ''Charlotte''. In Melbourne he became a partner in Turnbull, Orr & Co importing manufactured goods. He later formed R. & P. Turnbull in Market St, Melbourne. He lived in Port Albert in the 1840s managing the interests of his firm in Gippsland where the partnership had a dozen pastoral properties between 1838 and 1857. His five brothers were part owners of some of these properties. He retained his business connections with Melbourne and in 1851 he was elected to the inaugural Melbourne Chamber of Commerce. William Highett
William Highett (1807 – 29 November 1880) was a banker, landowner and politician in colonial Victoria. He was also a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Early life Highett was born in Weymouth, Dorset, England, in December 1807. His parents were Joseph Highett and his wife Elizabeth, ''née'' Harding. There were at least three siblings, John (born 1810), Sarah (1812) and Mary (1817). Colonial Australia Along with his brother John, William Highett arrived in Hobart Town aboard the ''Elizabeth'' in February 1830. They had intended to continue on to Sydney but decided to settle in Tasmania, obtaining a grant of 500 acres of land near George Town. They later acquired additional land near Launceston and Campbell Town. Matthew Hervey
Matthew Hervey (27 January 1820 – 1 December 1874) was a politician in colonial Victoria and Commissioner of Public Works. Hervey was born in Glasgow, Scotland, when eighteen years of age he emigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, and ultimately was largely engaged in pastoral pursuits in the Port Phillip District, which in 1851 was constituted the separate colony of Victoria. He played two first-class cricket matches for Victoria in 1851 and 1852. Hervey was elected to the part-nominated Victorian Legislative Council on 3 June 1853 for the Murray district and sworn-in August 1853. John Norman McLeod, often known as Norman McLeod (8 October 1816 – 18 April 1886) was a pastoralist and politician in colonial Victoria, a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly.
