William H. Sowden
William Henry Sowden (June 6, 1840 – March 3, 1907) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Biography William H. Sowden was born in Liskeard, Cornwall. He emigrated to the United States in 1846 with his father, who settled in Philadelphia, and later went to live with friends in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He attended the public schools and Allentown Academy. During the American Civil War, he served as a corporal in Company D, One Hundred and Twenty-eighth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and served from August 13, 1862, to May 19, 1863. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1864, and after graduation from Harvard Law School in 1865 commenced practice in Allentown. He served as solicitor of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, in 1868 and district attorney in 1872 through 1874. Marriott Henry Brosius (March 7, 1843 – March 16, 1901) was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Education and military service Marriott Brosius was born in Colerain Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he attended Thomas Baker's Academy. During the American Civil War, he enlisted as a private in Company K, Ninety-seventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, in October 1861, for three years, and reenlisted May 1864. He was honorably discharged in December 1864. On February 28, 1865, was commissioned a second lieutenant for bravery on the field of battle. After the war he attended the State Normal School at Millersville, Pennsylvania, and the law department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. William Mutchler (December 21, 1831 – June 23, 1893) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Biography William Mutchler (father of Howard Mutchler) was born in Palmer Township, Pennsylvania. He attended public schools and Vandeveer’s Academy in Easton, Pennsylvania. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice at Easton. He served as sheriff of Northampton County, Pennsylvania, from 1854 to 1860, and as prothonotary of Northampton County from 1861 to 1867. He was adjutant of the Thirty-eighth Pennsylvania Volunteers in 1863. He was appointed assessor of internal revenue in March 1867 and served until May 1869.
