William H. H. Hart
William Henry Harrison Hart (January 25, 1846/1848 – December 24, 1918) was the 16th California Attorney General. Prior to this position, Hart claims to have been a United States Secret Service agent and to have fought in the American Civil War. Early life There is little actual documentation on Hart's early life except for information he later provided himself, some of which is open to question. William Henry Harrison Hart was born on January 25, 1846 (or 1848), in England. He immigrated to the United States with his family at age four. Hart claimed to have been kidnapped by the Blackhawk Indians at the age of eight. He was then orphaned at age eleven. Hart struggled through a difficult childhood which led to his desire for danger and his allegedly joining the United States Secret Service at the age of only 14. Henry Markham
Henry Harrison Markham (November 16, 1840October 9, 1923) was an American lawyer and Republican politician. He was the 18th governor of California (1891–1895), and represented California's 6th congressional district during the 49th United States Congress (1885–1887). Earlier in life, he served as a Union Army officer in the American Civil War. Early life On November 16, 1840, Markham was born in Wilmington, New York. Career During the Civil War, Markham enlisted as a private in Company G, 32nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment; he was promoted to second lieutenant. Markham was part of General William Tecumseh Sherman's March to the Sea in 1864. He was wounded at the Battle of Rivers' Bridge in 1865, and discharged. After the war Markham returned to Wisconsin and settled in Milwaukee, where he studied law and passed the bar in 1867. He practiced law in Milwaukee in the state and federal courts.
