William Henry Barnes (April 5, 1885 - September 25, 1973) was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. Biography Barnes was born in Lisbon, Juneau County, Wisconsin, on April 5, 1885. On September 25, 1973, Barnes died in New Lisbon, Wisconsin. He is buried there. Career Barnes was a member of the Assembly from 1935 to 1940. He was a member of the Wisconsin Progressive Party. Wisconsin State Assembly
The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Representatives are elected for two-year terms, elected during the fall elections. If a vacancy occurs in an Assembly seat between elections, it may be filled only by a special election. The Wisconsin Constitution limits the size of the State Assembly to between 54 and 100 members inclusive. Since 1973, the state has been divided into 99 Assembly districts apportioned amongst the state based on population as determined by the decennial census, for a total of 99 representatives. From 1848 to 1853 there were 66 assembly districts; from 1854 to 1856, 82 districts; from 1857 to 1861, 97 districts; and from 1862 to 1972, 100 districts. Lisbon is a town in Juneau County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,020 at the 2000 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.3 square miles (73.3 km2), of which, 28.2 square miles (73.2 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km2) of it (0.18%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 1,020 people, 388 households, and 292 families residing in the town. The population density was 36.1 people per square mile (13.9/km2). There were 438 housing units at an average density of 15.5 per square mile (6.0/km2). New Lisbon, Wisconsin
New Lisbon is a city in Juneau County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,748 at the 2020 census. History The site of New Lisbon was used as a seasonal winter encampment by Ho-Chunk people, who called it (anglicized to ''Wa Du Shuda''), meaning "we leave canoe here." The United States acquired the land from the Ho-Chunk nation in an 1836 treaty. The first white settlers, Amasa Wilson and C.B. Smith, arrived in 1838 to harvest lumber in the vicinity. Wilson and Smith selected the site of New Lisbon for a log boom on the Lemonweir River and constructed a sawmill at the site in 1842-1843. In 1855, Amasa Wilson platted the village. J.A. Chase platted an addition not long afterwards. The village was originally named ''Mill Haven'' but later changed to ''New Lisbon'', possibly at the suggestion of county clerk Larmon Saxton, who hailed from Lisbon, Ohio. The Wisconsin Progressive Party (1934–1946) was a political party that briefly held a dominant role in Wisconsin politics. History The Party was the brainchild of Philip La Follette and Robert M. La Follette, Jr., the sons of the famous Wisconsin Governor and Senator Robert M. La Follette, Sr. The party was established in 1934 as an alliance between the longstanding "Progressive" faction of the Republican Party of Wisconsin, led by the La Follette family and their political allies, and certain radical farm and labor groups active in Wisconsin at the time. The party served as a vehicle for Philip La Follette to run for re-election as Governor and for his brother Robert to run for re-election to the United States Senate.
