William Griffith Dovey
William Griffith 'Bill' Dovey QC (1924 – 1990) was a judge of the Family Court of Australia from 1976 to 1989. Alongside his extensive career specializing as a Sydney barrister and later as a judge in family law, he was a member of the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve. He was the son of Supreme Court of New South Wales judge Bill Dovey. His sister Margaret married the future Prime Minister of Australia, Gough Whitlam. Dovey married Susan Fane De Salis, great granddaughter of famed pastoralist and politician Leopold De Salis. They had two daughters, Fane and Gillian. The Family Court of Australia was a superior Australian federal court of record which deals with family law matters, such as divorce applications, parenting disputes, and the division of property when a couple separate. Together with the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, it covered family law matters in all states and territories of Australia except for Western Australia, which has a separate Family Court. Bill Dovey
Wilfred Robert Dovey Queen's Counsel, QC (10 April 189412 December 1969) was an Australian barrister and judge. He served on the Supreme Court of New South Wales from 1953 to 1964. He was described as colourful, slightly eccentric and irascible, although he had a brilliant legal mind and a Shakespearean vocabulary. Margaret Whitlam
Margaret Elaine Whitlam, AO (née Dovey; 19 November 1919 – 17 March 2012) was an Australian social campaigner, author, and athlete. She was the wife of Gough Whitlam, the 21st Prime Minister of Australia from 1972 to 1975, and a representative of Australia in swimming at the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney. Early life Born Margaret Dovey in Bondi, New South Wales, she was the daughter of Wilfred Robert "Bill" Dovey, a New South Wales Supreme Court judge and Mary Dorothy Duncan. In the United Kingdom and in some Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth countries, a King's Counsel (Post-nominal letters, post-nominal initials KC) during the reign of a king, or Queen's Counsel (post-nominal initials QC) during the reign of a queen regnant, queen, is a lawyer (usually a barrister or advocate) who is typically a senior trial lawyer. Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RANVR) was a reserve force of the Royal Australian Navy. Formation In late 1920, the Navy Board proposed the creation of an Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve scheme, with approaches made to yachting and rowing clubs, starting in New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania. Men who were undergoing or liable to compulsory training under the ''Defence Act'' (Cwlth) were ineligible for enrolment. For the volunteers, a period of five years of service was proposed with parading twice a month, training occur outside of business hours, entry as an able seaman rating, and officer appointments not based on social or other positions. The Supreme Court of New South Wales is the highest state court of the Australian State of New South Wales. It has unlimited jurisdiction within the state in civil matters, and hears the most serious criminal matters. Edward Gough Whitlam (11 July 191621 October 2014) was the 21st prime minister of Australia, serving from 1972 to 1975. Leopold Fane De Salis
Leopold Fabius Dietegen Fane de Salis, (26 April 1816 – 20 November 1898) was a Tuscan-born Australian pastoralist and politician. Born in Florence to Jerome, 4th Count de Salis-Soglio and Henrietta Foster, he attended Eton College and studied sheep farming at Jedburgh in Scotland. In 1840 he migrated to Sydney, where he formed a partnership to run a station at Junee. In the same decade, in 1842, 1844 and 1848, his highly capable next elder brother William also sailed to Australia. They did much business together. In 1844 he married Charlotte Macdonald, with whom he had four children, two of whom (George and Leopold) would later become politicians themselves.
