William Graves (judge)
John William "Bill" Graves (born October 17, 1935) is a former associate justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, serving from 1995 to 2006. Early life Graves graduated from St. Mary High School in Paducah, Kentucky. He then attended the University of Notre Dame on a scholarship. In 1953, his freshman year at Notre Dame, he became part of a group of seven friends called "The Gang" that also included future talk show host Phil Donahue. Both Graves and Donahue graduated in 1957. Graves then earned a law degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law. He returned to Paducah and opened a law practice. Graves was a judge advocate general in the United States Army, on active duty and as a reserve, for 35 years. He received training at the Command and General Staff College, the Air War College, and the National Defense University. William Graves (MP)
William Graves (c.1724 – 30 April 1801) was a British politician. He was the eldest son of Rear-Admiral Thomas Graves and his second wife Elizabeth Budgell, and the brother of Thomas Graves. William was educated at Balliol College, Oxford and studied law at the Middle Temple (1739), where he was called to the bar in 1747. He became a Master in Chancery in 1761. He sat in Parliament as the MP for West Looe in Cornwall from 1768 to 1774 and for East Looe East or Orient is one of the four cardinal directions or points of the compass. William Carey Graves (December 1, 1895 in Washington Parish, Louisiana – January 26, 1966 in Dallas, Texas) was a United States Democratic Party, Democratic Texas State Senator for 4 terms and Majority Leader & Senate President for two of those terms. Graves was Governor of Texas for a day. Education and early years Carey Graves was educated in the public school system of Washington Parish, Louisiana. William Thomas Graves (born May 15, 1988) is an American professional basketball player who last played for FC Porto of the Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol (LPB). William Preston Graves (born January 9, 1953) is an American former politician who was the 43rd governor of Kansas from 1995 until 2003. Career Graves was born in Salina, Kansas to parents who owned a trucking firm. After graduating from Kansas Wesleyan University with a business degree, he worked in human resources. In 1986, he was elected Kansas Secretary of State and in 1991, he was appointed as a representative of state governments to the Competitiveness Policy Council. He defeated Democratic Congressman Jim Slattery in the Republican sweeping elections of 1994 at the age of 41, and became one of the youngest governors in Kansas history. A moderate Republican, Graves was known for his disputes with the conservative wing of the Kansas Republican Party. His term of office saw strong economic growth for Kansas after years of recession, and a continued emphasis on education. William Graves Sharp (March 14, 1859 – November 17, 1922) was an American lawyer, manufacturer, three-term congressman, and diplomat. Biography Sharp was born in Mount Gilead, Ohio on March 14, 1859. He moved to Elyria, Ohio with his mother and her parents, occupying the Starr-Worthington home on Washington Avenue. Education and early career He graduated LL.B. from the Law Department of the University of Michigan in 1881 and then practiced law in Elyria. He also engaged in the manufacture of charcoal, pig iron, and chemicals. From 1885–88 he was prosecuting attorney of Lorain County, Ohio. Political career He was a Democratic presidential elector in 1892, a Democratic candidate for Congress in 1900, and a member of the Sixty-first to the Sixty-third Congresses (1909–15), but resigned in 1914 to become Ambassador to France by appointment of President Wilson.
