Willie Gillis
Willie Gillis, Jr. (more commonly simply Willie Gillis) is a fictional character created by Norman Rockwell for a series of World War II paintings that appeared on the covers of 11 issues of ''The Saturday Evening Post'' between 1941 and 1946. Gillis was an everyman with the rank of private whose career was tracked on the cover of the ''Post'' from induction through discharge without being depicted in battle. He and his girlfriend were modeled by two of Rockwell's acquaintances. Gillis was not exclusively used on ''Post'' covers, but the ''Willie Gillis'' series of covers was a hallmark of Rockwell's wartime work. Rockwell was in his prime, and the ''Post'' was at the peak of its popularity with a subscribership of four million; many of those subscribers believed that Gillis was a real person. The Rookies
''The Rookies'' is an American police procedural series that aired on ABC from 1972 until 1976. It follows the exploits of three rookie police officers working in an unidentified city for the fictitious Southern California Police Department (SCPD). History The success of Joseph Wambaugh's book, ''The New Centurions'', as well as NBC's ratings success with '' Adam-12'', had sparked interest at the time in a more realistic depiction and storytelling of the typical uniformed police officer. Bill Gillis
John William Gillis (October 31, 1936 – August 15, 2009), generally known as Bill Gillis, was a Canadian politician who served in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1970 to 1998. He represented the electoral district of Antigonish for the Liberals. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, his family moved to Antigonish when he was six weeks old. Gillis was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University, and held a doctorate in geology from Pennsylvania State University. Gillis was employed as a geologist with the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources from 1962 to 1967. He taught geology at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia from 1967 to 1970. Gillis died on August 15, 2009, as a result of brain cancer. William Gillis (politician)
William Gillis (10 November 1859 – 18 September 1929) was a British Labour politician who served as an MP between 1918 and 1922. Born on a ship in the Black Sea, Gillis grew up in Gressenhall in Norfolk. He moved to the West Riding of Yorkshire and became active in the Yorkshire Miners' Association (YMA) and the Labour Party. He was elected to Hoyland Nether Urban District Council and served for a time as its chairman. He stood in the 1921 Penistone by-election, gaining the seat for Labour, but was defeated at the 1922 general election, and did not stand again.
