William G. Shaughnessy
William G. Shaughnessy was an American politician who served as mayor of Woburn, Massachusetts, and was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Early life Shaughnessy was born on July 10, 1918, in Woburn. He graduated from Woburn High School and the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance. Outside of politics, Shaughnessy worked as an accountant and was the president of Wells Package Store, Inc. Political career From 1948 to 1951, Shaughnessy was a member of the Woburn school committee. He then served on the city council from 1954 to 1955. From 1956 to 1960 he was the mayor of Woburn. In 1958 he was a candidate for State Treasurer. He lost in the Democratic primary to incumbent John Francis Kennedy 62% to 38%. Shaughnessy returned to elected office in 1975 as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He represented the 29th Middlesex district until 1979. Woburn ( ) is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 40,876 at the 2020 census. Woburn is located north of Boston. Woburn uses Massachusetts' mayor-council form of government, in which an elected mayor is the executive and a partly district-based, partly at-large city council is the legislature. It is the only one of Massachusetts' 351 municipalities to refer to members of its City Council as "Aldermen." Burlington, Massachusetts
Burlington is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 26,377 at the 2020 census. History It is believed that Burlington takes its name from the English town of Bridlington, Yorkshire, but this has never been confirmed. It was first settled in 1641, and was officially incorporated on February 28, 1799; several of the early homesteads are still standing, such as the Francis Wyman House, dating from 1666. The town is sited on the watersheds of the Ipswich, Mystic, and Shawsheen rivers. In colonial times up through the late 19th century, there was an industry in the mills along Vine Brook, which runs from Lexington to Bedford and then empties into the Shawsheen River. John Francis Kennedy (politician)
John Francis Kennedy (August 1, 1905 – May 13, 1994) was the Treasurer of Massachusetts from 1955 to 1961. Kennedy worked as a supervisor in the miscellaneous small parts stockroom for Gillette in Canton, Massachusetts, before seeking public office. Kennedy first sought the office of Treasurer in 1952, losing the Democratic primary to Foster Furcolo. Kennedy sought the office again in 1954, defeating the party endorsed candidate ( Clement A. Riley) and a third candidate (William F. Carr) in the Primary. Kennedy then defeated Republican Augustus Gardner Means to win the office. Kennedy's electoral success is widely seen to be a result of him having the same name as then-Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy.
