William Franklin Strowd
William Franklin Strowd (December 7, 1832 – December 12, 1911) was a Populist U.S. Congressman from North Carolina between 1895 and 1899. Strowd was born near Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1832 and attended local schools. A farmer, he was a private in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War The American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 26, 1865; also known by other names) was a civil war in the United States. It was fought between the Union ("the North") and the Confederacy ("the South"), the latter formed by states .... Strowd was a member of the North Carolina Constitution Convention of 1875. Populist Party (United States)
The People's Party, also known as the Populist Party or simply the Populists, was a left-wing agrarian populist political party in the United States in the late 19th century. The Populist Party emerged in the early 1890s as an important force in the Southern and Western United States, but collapsed after it nominated Democrat William Jennings Bryan in the 1896 United States presidential election. A rump faction of the party continued to operate into the first decade of the 20th century, but never matched the popularity of the party in the early 1890s.
