William Francis Dennehy
William Francis Dennehy (1853–1918), was an Irish journalist, writer and editor. He edited the '' Irish Catholic'' newspaper since its founding in 1888 until 1917 shortly before he died in 1918. Dennehy, a close associate William Martin Murphy, helped organise the Irish International Exhibition in 1907 in Dublin. and compiled a record of it. During the split in the Irish Parliamentary Party, Dennehy took the Anti-Parnell view. He became owner of ''The Irish Catholic'', which upon his death in 1918 became a limited company. ''The Irish Catholic'' is a 40-page Irish weekly newspaper providing news and commentary about the Catholic Church. The newspaper is privately owned by editor-in-chief Garry O’Sullivan, managed by a private limited company and independent of the Catholic hierarchy in Ireland. Unusual among nationally-available newspapers, it is not a member publication of the Press Council of Ireland, and so is not answerable to the Office of the Press Ombudsman. History ''The Irish Catholic'' was founded in 1888 by Timothy Daniel Sullivan, a former Lord Mayor of Dublin and an Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP) MP at Westminster. A number of the paper's early staff, including Patrick Fogarty, had worked at ''The Nation'' newspaper. William Martin Murphy
William Martin Murphy (6 January 1845 – 26 June 1919) was an Irish businessman, newspaper publisher and politician. A member of parliament (MP) representing Dublin from 1885 to 1892, he was dubbed "William ''Murder'' Murphy" among the Irish press and the striking members of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union during the Dublin Lockout of 1913. He was arguably both Ireland's first "press baron" and the leading promoter of tram development. Early life Murphy was born on 6 January 1845 in Castletownbere, County Cork, and educated at Belvedere College. It is frequently incorrectly stated (including in the cited article) that he was an 'only child' when in fact he had two brothers who died young, and a sister Margaret Cullinane, who lived to be 93, and was buried with Murphy in Glasnevin. Irish International Exhibition
The Irish International Exhibition (sometimes ''Dublin International'') was a world's fair held in Dublin in 1907, when all of Ireland was still part of the United Kingdom. Summary The decision to hold the exhibition was taken at the Irish Industrial Conference in April 1903, and inspired by a small exhibition in Cork (the ''Cork International Exhibition'') 5 years earlier. The 1907 exhibition was intended to improve the trade of Irish goods. The leading force behind the project was William Martin Murphy, a businessman and owner of the ''Irish Independent'', Clerys department store (Clery & Co.), the Dublin United Transport Company and several other Irish and overseas ventures.
