William Fountaine
William Fountaine (August 15, 1897 – December 6, 1945) was a film actor in the United States. He starred in Oscar Micheaux's 1922 film ''Uncle Jasper's Will'', '' The Dungeon'' released the same year, and ''Deceit'' in 1923. He had a leading role in the well received 1929 musical film ''Hallelujah''. According to an account of experiences filming the movie, Fountaine protested at bigoted dialogue he was supposed to say stating he "wouldn't be able to return to Harlem" if he repeated the lines in the script. Oscar Devereaux Micheaux (; January 2, 1884 – March 25, 1951) was an author, film director and independent producer of more than 44 films. Although the short-lived Lincoln Motion Picture Company was the first movie company owned and controlled by black filmmakers, Micheaux is regarded as the first major African-American feature filmmaker, a prominent producer of race films, and has been described as "the most successful African-American filmmaker of the first half of the 20th century". He produced both silent films and sound films. ''The Dungeon'' is a 1922 race film directed, written, produced and distributed by Oscar Micheaux, considered the African-American Cecil B. DeMille due to his prolific output of films during the silent era, one of his greatest works being ''Body and Soul (1925 film), Body and Soul'' (1924). ''The Dungeon'' was his first horror effort, an early blaxploitation take on the ''Bluebeard'' legend. Micheaux was criticized by D. Ireland Thomas, a columnist with the ''Chicago Defender'', for his casting of light-skinned African Americans who could pass for white, attempting to make his films more commercially successful. Thomas questioned whether Micheaux was "relying on his name alone to tell the public that it is a race production; or maybe he is after booking it in white theaters." ''Hallelujah'' is a 1929 American pre-Code Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical directed by King Vidor, and starring Daniel L. Haynes and Nina Mae McKinney. Filmed in Tennessee and Arkansas and chronicling the troubled quest of a sharecropper, Zeke Johnson (Haynes), and his relationship with the seductive Chick (McKinney), ''Hallelujah'' was one of the first films with an all-African American cast produced by a major studio. (Although frequently touted as Hollywood's first all-black cast musical, that distinction more properly belongs to ''Hearts in Dixie'', which premiered several months earlier.) ''The Virgin of the Seminole'' (sometimes listed as ''The Virgin of Seminole'') is a 1922 race film directed, written and produced by Oscar Micheaux. Plot The film focused on a young black man who joins the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and becomes a hero by rescuing a captive mixed-race woman from a hostile American Indian tribe. The young man later purchases a ranch that becomes the foundation for great financial wealth.
