William Thomas Ellis (5 November 1895 – 18 November 1939) was an English footballer born in Wolverhampton who played in the Football League for Sunderland, Birmingham, Lincoln City and York City as a winger. He made his debut for Sunderland against Middlesbrough on 6 March 1920 in a 2–0 win at Ayresome Park. During his time at Sunderland, from 1920 to 1927, he made 192 league appearances and scored 32 goals. He linked up well with Charlie Buchan for whom he created many goals from the left wing. William Hodgson Ellis
William Hodgson Ellis (1845–1920) was a Professor of Applied Chemistry from 1878, and Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering in the University of Toronto from 1914, until his retirement in 1919. Early life William Hodgson Ellis was born on 23 November 1845 in Holme Hall, Bakewell, Derbyshire, England. He was the son of the only daughter of Mr. Joseph Hodgson of Holme Hall and her husband, the resident physician, John Eimeo Ellis. Ellis emigrated with his family to the State of Illinois in 1857 and then to Toronto in 1859. Ellis's paternal grandfather was William Ellis (1794–1872), the English missionary and author. William Henry Ellis (engineer)
Sir William Henry Ellis, GBE (20 August 1860 – 4 July 1945) was a British civil engineer and steel maker. Ellis was born on 20 August 1860 in Pitsmoor, Sheffield, Yorkshire. He was the son of John Devonshire Ellis (1824–1906) and, his wife, Elizabeth Bourne. In 1889 Ellis married Lucy Rimington, the daughter of Francis William Tetley who was a director of Joshua Tetley & Son, the brewery in Leeds. Together they had two sons and two daughters. Ellis was a steel maker and in 1914 was elected Master Cutler, the head of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire and ambassador of industry for Sheffield. His tenure as Master Cutler, a position which usually changes each year, lasted until 1918 due to the outbreak of the First World War. In 1918 he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering by the University of Sheffield. William Henry Ellis (also known as Guillermo Enrique Eliseo; June 15, 1864September 24, 1923) was an American businessman. Early life Ellis was born on June 15, 1864, in Victoria, Texas, to Charles Ellis and Margaret Nelson Ellis, former slaves. He later claimed that his parents were Cuban or Mexican, rather than African, and styled himself as "Guillermo Enrique Eliseo". Ellis was fluent in Spanish. He first worked on a ranch, assisted in leather dealing, and later inspecting customs, trading cattle, and growing cotton. Career and activism In 1888 he started farming cattle in Mexico. In the late 19th century he was a member of the Republican Party, particularly supporting Norris Wright Cuney. Ellis also became close to Henry McNeal Turner. Both Turner and Cuney supported the back-to-Africa movement, while Ellis supported colonizing African-Americans to Latin America, specifically Mexico. Sir William Charles Ellis (10 March 1780 – 24 October 1839) was the superintendent of the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum. His ideas on the treatment of mental illness became widely influential. William Ellis (1758) was an English farmer of Little Gaddesden, near Hemel Hempstead, in Hertfordshire, known as writer on agriculture. Biography Ellis is supposed to have been born about 1700, received an ordinary education, and began life as a plain farmer. For nearly fifty years he held a farm at Little Gaddesden, Hertfordshire, on which, however, he made no pretense to scientific agriculture. Ellis was born in England in 1834 but his official residence when he received his Medal of Honor was listed as Watertown, Wisconsin. His name was misspelled as "William Elise" on his Medal of Honor citation. He died February 1, 1875, in San Bernardino County, California. William Ellis (1800–1881) was an English businessman, writer on economics, and educational thinker. Life Ellis was born in January 1800. His father, Andrew Ellis Ellis, an underwriter at Lloyd's of London, was the descendant of a French refugee family named De Vezian, and took the name Ellis shortly after the son's birth. His mother was Maria Sophia Fazio, of Italian extraction. He was educated at a school in Bromley, and at the age of fourteen became his father's assistant at Lloyd's. In 1824, on the foundation of the Indemnity Marine Insurance Company, he became assistant-underwriter. In 1827 he was appointed chief manager of the company, and held that position for many years, until on his retirement he was elected director. Economic interests Ellis was interested in economic speculations, and joined the "Utilitarian Society" formed by John Stuart Mill. William Ellis (1747–1810) was an English engraver and oil painter. Life Ellis was born in London in 1747, the son of a writing engraver. He was placed as a pupil with William Woollett. He produced some fine plates in the style of his teacher, some being executed in conjunction with him, including the two portraits of Rubens and his wife, published in 1774; ''A River Scene with a Windmill'', after Salomon Ruysdael, published in 1777; ''Solitude'', after Richard Wilson, published in 1778; and two scenes from the ''Vicar of Wakefield'', after Thomas Hearne, published in 1780, and exhibited at the Society of Artists in that year. Major William Ellis, FRS FRAS FRMS (20 February 1828 – 11 December 1916) was a British astronomer and meteorologist. He was born 20 February 1828, in Greenwich, United Kingdom, the son of Henry Ellis, an assistant at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. In 1841 he began working at the Royal Observatory, first as a computer and later as an observer. In 1852 he took charge of Durham University Observatory, before returning the following year to the Royal Observatory, Greenwich where he first headed the Time Department and later the Magnetical and Meteorological Department. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1864, a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society in 1875, and a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1893. He served as president of the Royal Meteorological Society in 1886 and 1887. Ellis was also a member of the Eugenics Education Society.
