William Elliot Of Wells
William Elliot of Wells (1701–1764) was an army officer, courtier, and Member of Parliament during the reign of George II. The son of William Elliot of Wells (1660-1728, known to posterity as the "Laceman", from his trade in gold-embroidered lace from which he made his fortune) and his wife Eleanor née Tankard, the younger William was christened 6 March 1701–2 at St James's Church, Piccadilly, Westminster. Around 1720, he stood as legal guardian to Granville Elliott, the infant son of his elder sister Charlotte Elliot and her recently deceased husband Roger Elliott. He entered the army in 1722 as a cornet in the Royal Regiment of Horse Guards, and in the following year joined Charles Churchill's Regiment of Dragoons as a captain. While serving under Col. Churchill (1679-1740), Elliot witnessed the will of Churchill's mistress, the celebrated actress Anne Oldfield (1683-1730), and was one of the pallbearers at her funeral in 1730. William Elliot (Irish Politician)
William Elliot (12 March 1766 – 26 October 1818) was an Irish politician who sat in the Irish House of Commons before its abolition. After the Act of Union he sat as a Whig in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Elliot was elected to the Irish House of Commons in 1796 as a Member of Parliament for St Canice. At the 1798 election he was returned for both Carlow Borough and for St Canice, but chose to continue to sit for St Canice. He held that seat until the Parliament of Ireland was abolished at the end of 1800 by the Act of Union, when he did not initially have a seat in the new Parliament of the United Kingdom. However, he was elected at an unopposed by-election in March 1801 as MP for Portarlington, and held that seat until the 1802 general election, when he was returned to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom for the English borough of Peterborough. William Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 3rd Earl Of Minto
William Hugh Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 3rd Earl of Minto (; 19 March 1814 – 17 March 1891), was a British Whig politician. He was the eldest son of Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 2nd Earl of Minto. From 1814 until his accession in 1859, he was styled Viscount Melgund. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was elected as the member of parliament (MP) for Hythe at a by-election in May 1837, and held the seat until the 1841 general election, when he stood unsuccessfully in Rochester. At the 1847 general election, he was returned as MP for Greenock. He held that seat until the 1852 general election, when he contested Glasgow without success. He was returned for Clackmannanshire and Kinross-shire at the 1857 general election,Craig, page 579 but did not stand again in 1859. He was made a Knight of the Thistle in 1870. William Elliot (rugby Union)
William "Mother" Elliot , also known as Bill, (9 May 1867 – 16 April 1958) was a New Zealand rugby union footballer who toured with the 1888–89 New Zealand Native football team. Elliot was one of five Pākehā (European) players in the predominantly Māori team, and his addition strengthened the side. Playing at half-back, he became one of the most prolific players on the tour, and appeared in at least 86 of their 107 matches in the British Isles, Australia and New Zealand. While on tour he played in all three of the internationals against England, Ireland, and Wales. When he returned from the tour he continued to play provincial rugby for Auckland, whom he represented from 1887 to 1896. Before he departed with the Natives he had twice represented Auckland against the touring British side, and had scored a try against them in the second match, a 4–0 victory for Auckland. Elliott Brothers (computer Company)
Elliott Brothers (London) Ltd was an early computer company of the 1950s–60s in the United Kingdom. It traced its descent from a firm of instrument makers founded by William Elliott (1780 or 1781-1853) in London around 1804. The research laboratories were originally set up in 1946 at Borehamwood and the first Elliott 152 computer appeared in 1950. In its day the company was very influential. The computer scientist Bobby Hersom was an employee from 1953-1954, and Sir Tony Hoare was an employee there from August 1960 to 1968. He wrote an ALGOL 60 compiler for the Elliott 803. He also worked on an operating system for the new Elliott 503 Mark II computer. The founder of the UK's first software house, Dina St Johnston, had her first programming job there from 1953–1958, and John Lansdown pioneered the use of computers as an aid to planning on an Elliott 803 computer in 1963. Persuasion (novel)
''Persuasion'' is the last novel completed by Jane Austen. It was published on December 20, 1817, along with ''Northanger Abbey'', six months after her death, although the title page is dated 1818. The story concerns Anne Elliot, an Englishwoman of 27 years, whose family moves to lower their expenses and reduce their debt by renting their home to an Admiral and his wife. The wife's brother, Captain Frederick Wentworth, was engaged to Anne in 1806, but the engagement was broken when Anne was persuaded by her friends and family to end their relationship. Anne and Captain Wentworth, both single and unattached, meet again after a seven-year separation, setting the scene for many humorous encounters as well as a second, well-considered chance at love and marriage for Anne. The novel was well-received in the early 19th century, but its greater fame came later in the century and continued into the 20th and 21st centuries. Air Chief Marshal Sir William Elliot, (3 June 1896 – 27 June 1971) was a senior Royal Air Force commander. RAF career Educated at Tonbridge School in the United Kingdom, Elliot joined the Army Service Corps in 1915 and then transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in 1917. On 30 July 1919 Elliot, then a captain, crashed behind enemy lines while fighting the Bolshevik forces during the North Russia Intervention. Another plane crewed by Lt John Mitchell and Captain Walter Anderson landed and picked up Elliot and flew him and his observer back to the base. He was appointed Officer Commanding No. 501 Squadron in 1932 before becoming Assistant Secretary to Committee of Imperial Defence in 1937 and being made Assistant Secretary of the War Cabinet Secretariat in 1939.
