William Earl Buchan
William Earl Buchan (born May 9, 1935) is an American sailor and Olympic Champion. He competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and won a gold medal in the Star class with Steven Erickson. He sailed on '' Intrepid'' in the 1974 America's Cup defender trials. Biography Buchan was born on May 9, 1935 in Seattle, Washington. He was the son of Bill Buchan Sr. He won ten medals at Star World Championships (from 1961 to 1985), including three golds. His son William Carl Buchan won a gold medal in the Flying Dutchman class at the 1984 Olympics. Steven Richard Erickson (born August 14, 1961) is an American sailor and Olympic Champion. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and won a gold medal in the Star class with William Earl Buchan. Steve Erickson won two Star Class World Championships: in 1985 with William Earl Buchan; and, in 1988 with Paul Cayard. Erickson's first America's Cup was with Tom Blackaller, on the 12 Meter "USA" / US 61, from San Francisco. He served as the mainsail trimmer. Perth, Western Australia. 1987. The National Sailing Hall of Fame is a nonprofit educational organization that promotes sailing and racing by recognizing individuals who have contributed to the sport, highlighting sailing's contribution to the American culture; and demonstrating its value as a hands-on tool for teaching math and science. The Flying Dutchman is a Dutch planing sailing dinghy that was designed by Uus Van Essen and Conrad Gülcher as a high performance, one design racer and first built in 1951. The boat was an Olympic sailing class from 1960 until 1992. The Star World Championship are international sailing (sport), sailing regattas in the Star (sailboat), Star class organized by the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association sanctioned by International Sailing Federation. American sailor Lowell North has won the most titles, with five titles between 1945 and 1973 and another seven podiums. Brazilian crew Bruno Prada won also five titles between 2007 and 2019.
