William Dutton (captain)
William Dutton (31 August 1811 – 20 July 1878), known as "Captain Dutton", was a whaler and seaman remembered as a pioneer of Portland, Victoria. Posthumously he has been referred to as "William Pelham Dutton". History Early life Dutton was born in Sydney, a son of Henry and Margaret Dutton, who had emigrated from England some years previously; in 1813 his family moved to Hobart Town, at that time a major shipping port. He was employed as a sailor by Captain John Griffiths, a whaler and merchant of Griffiths, Connolly and Sinclair. He first landed at Portland Bay near Blacknose Point in December 1828 with Captain McMullen in the schooner ''Madeira Packet''. This is the text of a statutory declaration made by Dutton in 1874. The Gunditjmara or Gunditjamara, also known as Dhauwurd Wurrung, are an Aboriginal Australian people of southwestern Victoria (Australia), Victoria. They are the traditional owners of the areas now encompassing Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Woolsthorpe, Victoria, Woolsthorpe and Portland, Victoria, Portland. Their land includes much of the Budj Bim heritage areas. The Kerrup Jmara (Kerrupjmara, Kerrup-Jmara) are a clan of the Gunditjmara, whose traditional lands are around Lake Condah. The Koroitgundidj (Koroit gundidj) are another clan group, whose lands are around Tower Hill (volcano), Tower Hill. The Djargurd Wurrung, Girai wurrung, and Gadubanud are also Aboriginal Victorian groups who all spoke languages in the dialect continuum known as the Dhauwurd Wurrung language ("Gunditjmara language").
