William Augustus Darling
William Augustus Darling (December 27, 1817 – May 26, 1895) was a U.S. Representative from New York. Biography Darling was born in Newark, New Jersey, and attended the local schools. He moved to New York City, where he was employed as a clerk and became involved in the wholesale grocery business. He also served as director of the Mercantile Library Association. In addition to his business career, Darling served as a private and officer in the New York National Guard's 7th Regiment for eleven years. From 1847 to 1854 Darling served as New York City's deputy receiver of taxes. He served as president of the Third Avenue Railroad from 1854 to 1865. Active in the Republican from its inception, Darling was a presidential elector in 1860; the Republicans carried New York, and Darling cast his ballot for the ticket of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin. Sir William Young Darling CBE FRSE LLD MC (8 May 1885 – 4 February 1962) was the Unionist Member of Parliament in the British House of Commons for the Edinburgh South constituency from 1945 to 1957. He was a director of the Royal Bank of Scotland from 1942 to 1957. Life He was born in Carlisle, the second son of William Darling of Edinburgh. He was educated firstly at James Gillespie's School then Daniel Stewart's College and Heriot-Watt College. The University of Edinburgh later awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD). In the First World War he joined the Black Watch as a private in 1914 and then after receiving a commission he joined the Royal Scots in 1915 as a 2nd Lieutenant. He saw much action and was wounded five times. He was awarded the Military Cross with bar and was Mentioned in Dispatches. William Scott Darling (May 28, 1898 – October 29, 1951) was a Canadian-born writer and a pioneer screenwriter and film director in the Hollywood motion picture industry. He is often known in Hollywood histories as Scott Darling, though he was almost invariably credited in films as W. Scott Darling. Biography Born in Toronto, Ontario, Darling embarked on a career as a writer, primarily doing humor stories for magazines. He married Eleanor Fried, who later worked as a film editor, and they had a daughter, Gretchen (1915–1994), who became a stage actress and playwright. In 1914, Darling was hired by the Kalem Company of New York City to work at their California studios writing the scripts for the adventure film Serial (film), serial ''The Hazards of Helen''.
