William Cowan (footballer)
William Cowan (28 November 1900 – 1979) was an English footballer who played as a centre forward. Career Born in Gateshead, Cowan played for High Fell before moving to the Football League with Hull City, scoring on his debut in a 4–1 victory over Nottingham Forest on 12 October 1925. His last appearance for the club came in a 5–2 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers on 15 January 1927 and he finished his Hull career with nine goals in 12 appearances in all competitions. He made one appearance for Blackpool during the 1927–28 season before going on to score six in seven league appearances for Chesterfield in the 1928–29 season. William Cowan (fur Trader)
Doctor William Cowan (1818 – June 20, 1902) was a physician and fur trader. He was born in Scotland in 1818 and studied medicine at the University of Glasgow. He caught cholera during the epidemic of 1848–1849 and decided to move to Canada for his health. He went to Upper Fort Garry in the Red River settlement as a physician for a group being sent there. In 1852, he was appointed chief magistrate and became a member of the Council of Assiniboia the following year. Cowan joined the Hudson's Bay Company as a doctor and fur trader and, in 1856, he was sent to Moose Factory. He became chief trader there in 1860. In 1862, he returned to Upper Fort Garry as second-in-command to the governor of Assiniboia, William Mactavish. On November 2, 1869, Louis Riel and the National Committee took control of Upper Fort Garry. Cowan spent the winter under house arrest but is believed to have been sympathetic to Riel's group. William Cowan (politician)
William Cowan (October 25, 1825 – January 7, 1899) was a farmer and reeve of North Gower Township, Ontario. He was born in County Leitrim, Ireland in 1825, the son of Patrick Cowan, and was educated there, earning a teaching certificate. He emigrated to North America and arrived in Bytown around 1845. He taught school in North Gower for five years. In 1850, he married Caroline McCrea; he also purchased a farm in the township around that time. Cowan was reeve for the township from 1865 to 1869. In 1866, he served as warden for Carleton County. Cowan also served as justice of the peace, was clerk in the division court for 21 years and became a captain in the local militia. In 1870, he was named secretary for the county and, in 1873, was named county treasurer. Sir William Henry Cowan (22 May 1862 – 11 January 1932) was a politician in the United Kingdom. The son of William Cowan and Elizabeth Giles, he was educated at Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh Collegiate School and the University of Edinburgh. He was elected as Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Guildford from 1906 to 1910 and for Aberdeenshire Eastern from 1910 to 1922, then as a Unionist for Islington North from 1923 to 1929. As a parliamentarian, Cowan became interested in matters concerning immigration including promoting immigration of British families to dominions such as Australia. William Maurice Cowan (born April 4, 1969) is an American lawyer who served as a United States Senator from Massachusetts from February 1, 2013, to July 16, 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as legal counsel and chief of staff to Governor Deval Patrick. Patrick appointed him on an interim basis to fill the vacancy left by fellow Democrat John Kerry, who resigned to become U.S. Secretary of State. Cowan declined to run in the 2013 special election to complete the remainder of Kerry's term. He was succeeded by fellow Democrat Ed Markey. Cowan was the eighth African-American U.S. Senator and the second from Massachusetts after Edward Brooke. William V. Cowan, is a retired USMC lieutenant colonel and a former contributor for the Fox News Channel from 2001 to 2016. Cowan was born in Sacramento, California. He enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17, received an appointment to and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1966, and was commissioned as a lieutenant the United States Marine Corps. He subsequently spent three and a half years in Vietnam. Appearing primarily as an outfielder, Cowan totalled 493 games played, over all or part of eight Major League Baseball (MLB) seasons, for the Chicago Cubs (1963–64), New York Mets (1965), Milwaukee Braves (1965), Philadelphia Phillies (1967), New York Yankees (1969), and California Angels (1969–72).
