William Chapman (engineer)
William Chapman (1749–1832) was an English engineer. Born in Whitby, he worked on the construction of the Old and Humber Docks in Hull, as well as many drainage and canal projects. He is credited with the invention of the bogie and articulation (see Articulated vehicle) for rail vehicles. Personal life William Chapman was born on 7 March 1749 in Whitby. His father, Captain William Chapman, already had three daughters from his first marriage, but William was the first of ten children born to his second wife, Hannah Baynes. He left home in 1765, moving to Barnes, Sunderland, and then to Newcastle. Two years later, he joined the Merchant Navy, and was able to enrol in the Guild of Master Mariners in 1769. Next he set up as a merchant and coal fitter, and with his brother, took out a lease on collieries at St. Anthony's and Wallsend in 1778. Death Of William Chapman
The shooting of William L. Chapman II, a black 18-year-old, on April 22, 2015, in Portsmouth, Virginia, when Chapman was shot and killed in a Wal-Mart parking lot by Portsmouth Police Officer Stephen D. Rankin. Rankin had been responding to a report of suspected shoplifting, and engaged in a physical struggle with Chapman, who instigated the altercation, while trying to arrest him. The shooting occurred approximately four years after the death of Kirill Denyakin, who died after being shot by Rankin in 2011. In September 2015, Rankin was indicted on the charge of first-degree murder in Chapman's death, and was found guilty by a jury of voluntary manslaughter on August 4, 2016. Shooting Wal-Mart store security called police at 7:30 a.m., reporting that a shoplifter was leaving the store. Doctor William Chapman (13 May 1797 – 1867). He was born at Headlam Hall, Durham, the second son of John Chapman Esq. and his wife Mary Chapman (née Robinson) of Alwent Hall in the County of Durham. As a young man, he went to London to train as a medical practitioner. At the age of 30 he married Sarah Lisgo of Durham and they had three sons and four daughters. At an early stage in his life he recognised the necessity for scenic reserves and recreational areas in London and he was appointed a Director of the Kew Botanical Gardens. Later he was instrumental in planting the willows along the Avon River in Christchurch, New Zealand. He was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. Being resourceful, they decided to emigrate to New Zealand as there was a need for medical people in the Canterbury settlement. George William Albert Chapman, né George William Alphred (13 December 1850 – 23 February 1917), was a Canadian poet. Chapman was born at Saint-François-de-Beauce, Quebec (today's Beauceville), and was educated at Levis College in 1862-1867. He studied law, afterward engaged in commercial pursuits, and later entered the civil service of the Province of Quebec. Chapman worked for some time as a journalist in Quebec City and Montreal; but in 1902 became a French translator for the Dominion Senate and removed to Ottawa, Ontario. After his death in 1917, he was entombed at the Notre Dame des Neiges Cemetery in Montreal. William Chapman (April 30, 1923 – April 24, 2012) was an American operatic baritone and stage actor. He appeared in several Broadway productions and was notably a leading performer at the New York City Opera from 1957 through 1979. William Leslie Chapman (7 February 1910 – 22 July 1971) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1956 and 1962. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Early life Chapman was born in Singleton, New South Wales. He was the son of a policeman and was raised by his grandparents in the Penrith area. He was educated to elementary level and initially worked as a porter for the New South Wales Government Railways but was retrenched during the Great Depression. He commenced a carrier business in 1934 with one truck and eventually built this into a 24-truck fleet. He was involved in community groups in the Penrith region including Rotary and the Australian Red Cross. Chapman was elected as an alderman to Penrith City Council between 1948 and 1959 and between 1961 and 1971. He was the mayor between 1950 and 1956 and between 1961 and 1968.
