William Caryl Ely
William Caryl Ely (February 25, 1856 – December 14, 1921) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Early life and education W. Caryl Ely was born on February 25, 1856, in Middlefield, Otsego County, New York, the son of Assemblyman William H. Ely. Ely's grandfathers were New York State Senator Sumner Ely (1787–1857) and New York State Assemblyman Leonard Caryl; many of his lineal ancestors were soldiers in the American Revolution. Ely attended schools in Otsego County, and later entered Cornell University in the Class of 1878. However, he did not graduate and left college in his junior year. Soon afterward he began the study of the law, was admitted to the bar, at Ithaca in 1882, and practiced in East Worcester, New York. Career Political career Ely started his political career in 1880 as the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors of Otsego County, where he served in 1880 and 1881. Middlefield, New York
Middlefield is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 2,114 at the 2010 census. The Town of Middlefield is in the northeastern part of the county. It is the largest town by area in the county. History Settlers from Scotland and Ireland moved into this area around 1755. The first settlements were made near Middlefield village, which was formed from the Town of Cherry Valley in 1797. The Phoenix cotton mill was started in 1815, but became a wool mill in 1866. The 108th New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 6 to May 22, 1885, during the first year of David B. International Railway (New York–Ontario)
The International Railway Company (IRC) was a transportation company formed in a 1902 merger between several Buffalo-area interurban and street railways. The city railways that merged were the ''West Side Street Railway'', the ''Crosstown Street Railway'' and the ''Buffalo Traction Company''. The suburban railroads that merged included the ''Buffalo & Niagara Electric Street Railway'', and its subsidiary the ''Buffalo, Lockport & Olcott Beach Railway''; the ''Buffalo, Depew & Lancaster Railway''; and the ''Niagara Falls Park & River Railway''. Later the IRC acquired the Niagara Gorge Railroad (NGRR) as a subsidiary, which was sold in 1924 to the Niagara Falls Power Company. Niagara Falls Power Company
Niagara Falls Hydraulic Power & Manufacturing Company was an American company, based in Niagara Falls, New York that was the first company to generate hydroelectric power from Niagara Falls in 1882. The company built upon several predecessor companies efforts to construct a canal used for hydraulic mill power. In 1918, the company merged with Niagara Falls Power Company, which later became Niagara Mohawk and in 2002 was acquired by National Grid plc. Western New York
Western New York (WNY) is the westernmost region of the U.S. state of New York. The eastern boundary of the region is not consistently defined by state agencies or those who call themselves "Western New Yorkers". Almost all sources agree WNY includes the cities of Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Jamestown, and the surrounding suburbs, as well as the outlying rural areas of the Great Lakes lowlands and Niagara Frontier, and Chautauqua-Alleghany (or the western Southern Tier).
