William Buckley (convict)
William Buckley, also known as "wild white man", (born 1776–1780died 30 January 1856) was an English bricklayer and served in the military until 1802, when he was convicted of theft. He was then transported to Australia where he helped construct buildings for the fledgling penal settlement at Port Phillip Bay in what is now Victoria, Australia. He escaped the settlement in 1803, and was given up for dead, while he lived among the Indigenous Wallarranga tribe of the Wathaurong nation for 32 years. In 1835, he was pardoned and became an Indigenous culture recorder. From 1837 to 1850 he was a public servant in Tasmania. Early life William Buckley was born in 1776 or 1780 in the village of Marton in the Macclesfield area of Cheshire, England. His father was a farmer. As a child, he was adopted by his mother's father who lived in Macclesfield. William Edward Buckley
William Edward Buckley (1817 – 18 March 1892) was a Church of England clergyman, an academic who taught both classical languages and Old English, and also a journalist. He was Rawlinsonian Professor of Anglo-Saxon at the University of Oxford from 1844 to 1849. Early life Buckley was the fourth son of Joseph Buckley (died 1858), of the Crescent, Salford, and later of Ordsall Hill, by his marriage to Jean, a daughter of Frazer Smith of Stromness, Orkney, and was the grandson of John Buckley. He was one of eight children, who all survived to adulthood and were still living in 1874. In 1817 Joseph Buckley was boroughreeve, and in 1825 he moved his family to Devon. William George Buckley (8 August 1906 – 17 April 1973) was an Australian rugby league footballer and administrator. Playing career A front rower, Buckley played 75 lower grade matches for Newtown. He broke his leg in the 1928 NSWRFL season and his first grade career was over. Administrative career After playing, Buckley joined the New South Wales Rugby Football League General Committee as delegate of Newtown in 1940. When NSWRFL president Jersey Flegg died in 1960, Buckley replaced him and also became Chairman of the Australian Rugby League, a position he remained in from 1960 until his death in 1973. He was replaced as NSWRFL president by Kevin Humphreys. Accolades Bill Buckley was made a Life Member of Newtown and the Australian Rugby League and was also a member of the SCG Trust. William Francis Buckley (May 30, 1928 – June 3, 1985) was a United States Army officer in the United States Army Special Forces, and a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) station chief in Beirut from 1984 until 1985. His cover was as a political officer at the U.S. Embassy. He was kidnapped by the group Hezbollah in March 1984. He was held hostage and tortured by psychiatrist Aziz al-Abub. Hezbollah later claimed they executed him in October 1985, but another American hostage disputed that, believing that he died five months prior, in June. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery and is commemorated with a star on the Memorial Wall at the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. William Edward Buckley (born 21 November 1989) an English former professional footballer who played as a winger. In a career playing in all top four English leagues he started at local side, Rochdale, then going on to play for Watford, Brighton & Hove Albion and Sunderland, and had brief loan spells with Leeds United, Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday, finishing his career with Bolton Wanderers after a three year spell.
