Newcastle-under-Lyme (UK Parliament Constituency)
Newcastle-under-Lyme is a constituency in northern Staffordshire created in 1354 and represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2019 by Aaron Bell of the Conservative Party. It was the last to be co-represented by a member of the Conservative Party when it was dual-member, before the 1885 general election which followed the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 coupled with the Reform Act 1884. In 1919 the local MP, Josiah Wedgwood, shifted his allegiance from the Liberal Party — the Lloyd George Coalition Liberals allying with the Conservatives — to the Labour Party and the seat elected the Labour candidate who has stood at each election for the next hundred years, a total of 29 elections in succession. William Bowyer (Keeper Of The Records)
William Bowyer (d. 1569/1570) was an antiquary and government official who was a Member of Parliament and Keeper of the Records in the Tower of London early in the reign of Elizabeth I of England. He was the first Keeper to systematically organise and catalogue the store of government records maintained in the Tower. An avid collector of old manuscripts, he also created ''Heroica Eulogia'', a compilation of grants and verse eulogies relating to the earls of Leicester, along with satirical verses and illustrations, for presentation to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Early life William Bowyer was a son of Robert Bowyer, merchant and four-time mayor of Chichester, Sussex, and his wife Margaret. William Bowyer (MP)
Sir William Bowyer (c. 1588 – 1641) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1620 and 1641. Bowyer was the son of Sir John Bowyer of Knipersley Staffordshire. He became wealthy from coal and iron mines at Biddulph and Tunstall. Bowyer was elected Member of Parliament for Staffordshire in 1621 and was re-elected for the seat in 1624 and 1626. In April 1640 he was re-elected MP for Staffordshire in the Short Parliament and again in November 1640 for the Long Parliament, but died at the beginning of 1641. Bowyer married Hester Skeffington, daughter of Sir William Skeffington of Fisherwick, Staffordshire. Sir William Bowyer, 1st Baronet (29 June 1612 – 2 October 1679), was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1659 and 1679. Bowyer was the eldest son of Sir Henry Bowyer and his wife Anne Salter, daughter of Sir Nicholas Salter, and was baptised at St Olave's Church, Hart Street, London. He was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge. In 1630, he was called to the bar by Lincoln's Inn. Bowyer was High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire between 1646 and 1647 and a Member of Parliament (MP) for Buckinghamshire from 1659 until 1679. William Bowyer (1663–1737)
William Bowyer the elder (166327 December 1737), English printer, was apprenticed to a Miles Flesher in 1679, made a liveryman of The Stationers' and Newspaper Makers' Company in 1700, and nominated as one of the twenty printers allowed by the Star Chamber. Bowyer originally settled in White Friars, where he remained until January 1712/3, when his printing-house and warehouse were destroyed by fire. Bowyer began printing again on his own in October 1713 in Temple Lane. By 1716, thanks to the grant of a royal warrant for a charitable collection, and the generous support of the London trade, Bowyer was well on his way to economic recovery. William Bowyer, the son, born in 1699, entered the business as a corrector in June 1722. William Bowyer (printer)
William Bowyer (; 19 December 169913 November 1777) was an English printer known as "the learned printer". Life Born in London, Bowyer was educated at St John's College, Cambridge, and in 1722 became a partner in his father William Bowyer's business. In 1729 he was appointed printer of the votes of the British House of Commons, and in 1736 printer to the Society of Antiquaries, of which he was elected a fellow in 1737. He was also appointed printer to the Society for the Encouragement of Learning. On the death of his father in 1737 he became the sole owner of the Bowyer press. In 1759 he took as apprentice John Nichols, who was to be his successor and biographer. Bowyer was also a close collaborator with the prominent London bookseller Andrew Millar. In 1761 Bowyer became printer to the Royal Society, and in 1767 printer of the rolls of the House of Lords and the journals of the House of Commons.
