William Bowman (Australian Politician)
William Bowman (11 December 1800 – 11 December 1874) was an Australian politician and an elected member of the New South Wales Legislative Council between 1843 and 1856. He was also a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for 1 term from 1856 until 1858. Early life Bowman was born in Richmond, New South Wales and was the son of John Bowman, a pioneer settler from East Lothian in Scotland, and his wife Honor née Honey, from Cornwall. He had an elementary education and worked on his father's farm from an early age. He gradually increased his land holdings with further properties in the Bathurst and on the Talbragar River and experimented with vine cultivation and the exportation of salted beef to India. Richmond, New South Wales
Richmond is a town in New South Wales, in the local government area of the City of Hawkesbury. It is located 19 metres above sea level on the alluvial Hawkesbury River flats, at the foot of the Blue Mountains on the Cumberland Plain. It is about 65 km by road from Sydney and about 78 km by road from Lithgow. History The Darug people were the Aboriginal peoples to the area in 1788. The area was originally explored by British settlers in 1789 and the nearby eminence to the west of the Hawkesbury River was known by them as 'Richmond Hill'. The name was given by Governor Arthur Phillip, in honour of Charles Lennox, the third Duke of Richmond who was Master General of Ordnance in the Pitt administration. John Holden (Australian Politician)
John Rose Holden (22 February 1810 – 1 May 1860) was an English-Australian politician. Holden was born at Beaminster in Dorset to the Reverend William Rose Holden and Betty Everleigh. In 1829 he joined the army, and in 1831 was posted to New South Wales. He acquired a farm near Liverpool. He left the army in 1834, and on 7 April 1834 married Mary Hutchinson, with whom he had three children. From 1843 he was a director of the Bank of New South Wales, rising to vice-president in 1846 and president in 1851. From 1842 to 1846 he was a member of Sydney City Council. He was an elected member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1851 to 1853 and an appointed member from 1853 to 1856. He later retired to England, where he lived with his second wife, Susan Broadhurst. George Bowman (Australian Politician)
George Bowman (1795 East Lothian, Scotland – 26 August 1878 Richmond, New South Wales, Australia) was a pastoralist, benefactor of Richmond and politician in the colony of New South Wales. He was the eldest son of John Bowman, a pioneer settler from East Lothian in Scotland, and his wife Honor née Honey, from Cornwall. His brother William Bowman (1799–1874), also a Member of the first Legislative Council and also a Member of the Legislative Assembly. William Bede Dalley
William Bede Dalley (5 July 1831 – 28 October 1888) was an Australian politician and barrister and the first Australian appointed to the Privy Council of the United Kingdom. He was a leading lay representative and champion of the Catholic community and was known for his parliamentary and legal eloquence. Early life Dalley was born at Sydney in 1831 to Irish parents, John Dalley and Catherine Spillane, who were both convicts. He was educated at the Sydney College and St Mary's College. He was called to the bar in 1856. Political career In 1857 Dalley was elected to the Legislative Assembly as a representative of Sydney (City). In 1858 he successfully contested Cumberland Boroughs to help Charles Cowper's re-election in Sydney. He pressed for several reforms including an unsuccessful attempt to abolish the death penalty for rape. 1856 New South Wales Colonial Election
The 1856 New South Wales colonial election was held between 11 March and 19 April 1856. This election was for all of the 54 seats in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and it was conducted in 18 single-member constituencies, 13 2-member constituencies, two 3-member constituencies and one 4-member constituency, all with a first past the post system. This was not a secret ballot and voters were required to write their name and address on the ballot paper. Only men aged over 21 who owned at least a certain amount of land or had above a certain income, could vote. If a man fulfilled these requirements in multiple constituencies, then he was allowed to cast a vote in each. This was known as plural voting. Indigenous men were allowed to vote in theory (there was no specific law against them voting), but in practice they were generally not aware of the process, not encouraged to enrol, and were mostly excluded and unable to participate in the election. The New South Wales Legislative Council, often referred to as the upper house, is one of the two chambers of the parliament of the Australian state of New South Wales. The other is the Legislative Assembly. Both sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. It is normal for legislation to be first deliberated on and passed by the Legislative Assembly before being considered by the Legislative Council, which acts in the main as a house of review. The Legislative Council has 42 members, elected by proportional representation in which the whole state is a single electorate.
