William Borlase
William Borlase (2 February 169631 August 1772), Cornish antiquary, geologist and naturalist. From 1722, he was Rector of Ludgvan, Cornwall, where he died. He is remembered for his works ''The Antiquities of Cornwall'' (1754; 2nd ed., 1769) and ''The Natural History of Cornwall'' (1758), although his plans for a parish-by-parish county history were abandoned. Life and works Borlase was born on 2 February 1695/6Prior to 1752, the calendar generally in use in Britain was the Julian ("Old Style") calendar, in which the New Year began on 25 March. In contemporary records, Borlase would therefore have been regarded as having been born towards the end of the year 1695, but in modern historical writing the date is usually adjusted to the New Style year of 1696, or for clarity given in dual form as 1695/6. at Pendeen, of an ancient family originating at St Wenn. William Borlase (died 1629)
Sir William Borlase (ca. 1564 – 4 September 1629) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1604 and 1614. Borlase was the son of John Borlase of Buckinghamshire. He matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford, on 17 November 1581, aged 17. He was a student of Gray's Inn in 1584, described as being of Little Marlow (in Buckinghamshire). In 1601 he was High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire and was knighted at Beddington, Surrey on 28 June 1603. In 1604 he was elected Member of Parliament for Aylesbury and for Buckinghamshire in 1614. In 1624 he founded Sir William Borlase's Grammar School on its present site in memory of his son Henry Borlase, MP for Marlow, who died in that year. Borlase died at the age about 65 and was buried at Marlow on 10 September 1629. William Borlase (died 1630)
William Borlase (1589 – 15 December 1630) of Little Marlow and Bockmer, Buckinghamshire was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1614 and from 1628 to 1629. Borlase was the eldest son of William Borlase of Bockmer and Little Marlow, and his wife, Mary Backhouse. He matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford on 22 June 1604, aged 15, and succeeded his father in 1629, a year before his own death. In 1614, he was elected Member of Parliament for Wycombe. He was knighted at Warwick on 5 September 1617. In 1628 he was elected MP for Wycombe again. Borlase died at the age of about 42. He had married Amy Popham, daughter of Sir Francis Popham, and was the father of three sons, including Sir John Borlase, 1st Baronet; and William Borlase, MP for Marlow; and two daughters. William Borlase (died 1665)
William Borlase (15 October 1620 – October 1665) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1659 and 1665. Borlase was the younger son of Sir William Borlase of Marlow who was MP for Wycombe, and his wife Amy Popham, daughter of Sir Francis Popham. His elder brother was Sir John Borlase, 1st Baronet. He matriculated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford on 30 April 1635, aged 14, and was a student at Inner Temple in 1637. In 1659, Borlase was elected Member of Parliament for Great Marlow in the Third Protectorate Parliament. He was re-elected for Great Marlow in the Convention Parliament and again in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament. He sat until his death in 1665 at the age of 45. He was buried on 1 November 1665. Borlase married Joanna Bankes, daughter of Sir John Bankes, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas and his wife Mary Hawtrey; her sister Alice married his brother John. They had a son and four daughters. William Copeland Borlase
William Copeland Borlase (5 April 1848 – 31 March 1899) was a British antiquarian and Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1880 until 1887 when he was ruined by bankruptcy and scandal. Early life Borlase was born at Castle Horneck, near Penzance in Cornwall, England, the only son of Samuel Borlase and his wife Mary Anne (née Copeland) Borlase (d. 1882), daughter of William Copeland of Chigwell, Essex. A member of a wealthy Cornish family, Borlase's early life was much influenced by the archaeological work of his great-great-grandfather, Dr. William Borlase the Cornish historian. Young Borlase visited many of the ancient sites in Cornwall and in 1863 and supervised the excavations of the re-discovered prehistoric settlement and fogou at Carn Euny. Although Borlase produced many sketches he commissioned fellow Cornish antiquarian John Thomas Blight to do the engravings for the report.
