William Bertram (politician)
William Bertram (11 January 1875 – 11 June 1957) was an Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Maree in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1912 to 1929. He served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1920 to 1929. The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland is elected by the members of the Queensland Legislative Assembly to preside over sittings of the Assembly and to maintain orderly proceedings. The Speaker must be a member of the Legislative Assembly. The position is currently held by Curtis Pitt, a former Treasurer of Queensland who was elected to the post on 13 February 2018. Election The Legislative Assembly must choose a new Speaker when it meets following a general election. The member with the longest period of continuous service presides during the election, which is conducted by secret ballot. The Government party nominates one of its own to serve as Speaker, and that nominee is likely to win since the party typically has a majority of the seats. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). The Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division), branded as Liberal Queensland, was the Queensland division of the Liberal Party of Australia until 2008. It was initially formed in October 1943 as the Queensland People's Party (QPP), which then absorbed the disbanded Queensland branch of the United Australia Party in 1944. In 1945, the QPP had an agreement with the newly formed Liberal Party, where in the "federal sphere", QPP would be the Queensland division of the Liberal Party and would run its candidates under the Liberal Party banner in federal elections. However, in the "state sphere", it would continue to exist individually under its own banner. In July 1949, the QPP was renamed to reflect its status as the Queensland division of the Liberal Party. Harold Lowes
Harold Bertram Lowes (1 October 1926 – 22 August 2002) was an Australian lawyer and politician. He was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1974 until 1977, representing the electorate of Brisbane. Lowes was born in South Brisbane, the grandson of former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland William Bertram. His family moved around the state following his father's work for the Department of Health, and he was educated at South Brisbane State School, the Anglican Church Grammar School, and Townsville Grammar School. He served in the Australian Imperial Forces from 1945 until 1946, attaining the rank of lieutenant, and in the Citizens Military Forces from 1948 to 1952. Lowes completed his articled clerkship and the Solicitors Board course during this period, and was admitted as a solicitor in 1952. A union organizer (or union organiser in Commonwealth spelling) is a specific type of trade union member (often elected) or an appointed union official. William Lennon (8 December 1849 – 5 May 1938) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. He was Lieutenant-Governor of Queensland. Biography Lennon was born in Dublin, Ireland to parents William Lennon Snr and his wife Ann (née Martin). Arriving with his family in Melbourne in 1855 he received his education there and by 1870 he was employed as a clerk with the Victorian Mines Department.
