William Bennet (MP For Ripon)
William Bennet (after 1553 – February 1609), of Marlborough, Wiltshire, was an English politician. Education He was educated at John Roysse's Free School in Abingdon, (now Abingdon School). He was later a student of Gray's Inn. Career He was a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Ripon in 1593. He was a co-founder of Pembroke College, Oxford. Death and legacy He died in February 1609 and left lands to Christ's Hospital of Abingdon. He was the founder of the Bennet scholarship at Abingdon School which in his will, dated 29 Dec. 1608, made provision for the free education and apprenticeship of six poor boys of Abingdon, to be known as Bennet boys. The regulations for the Bennet Boys were set up on 30 November 1609 by his uncle Thomas Tesdale and his brother Ralph Bennett. The Bennet Boys existed from 1609 until 1870. William Bennet (bishop)
William Bennet (4 March 1746 – 16 July 1820) (spelled William Bennett on his memorial in Cloyne Cathedral) was Bishop of Cloyne, Ireland, and an antiquary. He was born in the Tower of London and educated at Harrow School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he was senior tutor for many years. One of his pupils was John Fane, who appointed Bennet as his chaplain on taking up the post of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1790. Bennet then became Bishop of Cork and Ross until 1794 when he became Bishop of Cloyne. He died in Montagu Square, London, and "His exertions while preaching a charity sermon at St Michael, Cornhill, exacerbated by a recent attack of gout, are supposed to have hastened his death." He was buried in Plumstead, at that time in Kent. He was a scholar and antiquary, elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1790. William Bennet (musician)
William Bennet or Bennett (c. 1767 – c. 1833 or after), born at Combe-in-Teignhead, Devonshire, was an English musician, a composer, organist and pianist. Bennet's father was a landowner in Devon, but had himself been organist of St Andrew's Church, Plymouth. As a young man Bennet was taught at Exeter, but he later moved to London where he studied with Johann Christian Bach and with Johann Samuel Schroeter. Returning to the west of England, in 1793 he took up an appointment as organist at St Andrew's, Plymouth, and in 1797 he married a Miss Debell. His compositions include music for piano and organ, and anthems and songs for voice. William Stiles Bennet (November 9, 1870 – December 1, 1962) was an American politician and a U.S. Representative from New York, and father of Augustus Witschief Bennet. Biography Born in Port Jervis, New York, Bennet was the son of James and Alice Leonora (Stiles) Bennet and attended the common schools. He graduated from Port Jervis Academy, Port Jervis, New York, in 1889; and from Albany Law School, Albany, New York, in 1892. He married Gertrude Witschief, on June 30, 1896. Career Bennet was a lawyer in private practice and an official reporter of the Orange County Board of Supervisors from 1892 to 1893. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (New York County, 21st District) in 1901 and 1902. He served as justice of the municipal court of New York, New York, 1903. William Bennet (engineer)
William Bennet (or Bennett) was an English civil engineer, noted for his work on canals. Nothing is known of his early life or family history, but details of his work from about 1790 until 1826 are documented. His major projects were for the Dorset and Somerset Canal and the Somersetshire Coal Canal. Early career It is thought that Bennet originated in Lancashire, as his first recorded projects concerned surveying of an extension to the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal from Bolton to join the Leeds Liverpool Canal, then being proposed, and surveying of the Bury and Sladen Canal, to create a link to the Rochdale Canal. The surveys were completed in 1792, after which he surveyed a canal from Accrington to Bury, which although it obtained an Act of Parliament in 1794 to authorise its construction, was never built. The first Parliament of the Kingdom of Great Britain was established in 1707 after the merger of the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland. It was in fact the 4th and last session of the 2nd Parliament of Queen Anne suitably renamed: no fresh elections were held in England or in Wales, and the existing members of the House of Commons of England sat as members of the new House of Commons of Great Britain.
