William Bell (1806–44)
William Bell (1 May 1806 – 4 August 1844) was a businessman and militia officer from Perth, Upper Canada. William Bell had a twin brother, John and was the son of William Bell, a Presbyterian missionary, who had arrived in Perth from Scotland in 1817. William and his brother both apprenticed in the mercantile trade before forming a partnership and opening a store at Perth in 1828. They also opened a store at Carleton Place with another brother, Robert. The aggressive merchandising style at the Perth store caused ill feelings amongst their competition. Perth, Ontario
Perth is a town in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It is located on the Tay River, southwest of Ottawa, and is the seat of Lanark County. History The town was established as a military settlement in 1816, shortly after the War of 1812. The settlement of Lanark County began in 1815. In that year "the Settlement forming on the Rideau River" as it was officially referred to (and which soon became known as "Perth Military Settlement") began to function under Military direction. The settlement was named Perth in honour of acting Governor-General Sir Gordon Drummond, whose ancestral home was Perthshire. Several townships were surveyed to facilitate the location of farms for military and other settlers; and the site of the future Town of Perth, which had been chosen as the headquarters of the Military Establishment was surveyed in 1816. The Province of Upper Canada (french: link=no, province du Haut-Canada) was a part of British Canada established in 1791 by the Kingdom of Great Britain, to govern the central third of the lands in British North America, formerly part of the Province of Quebec since 1763. Upper Canada included all of modern-day Southern Ontario and all those areas of Northern Ontario in the which had formed part of New France, essentially the watersheds of the Ottawa River or Lakes Huron and Superior, excluding any lands within the watershed of Hudson Bay. William Bell (clergyman)
William Bell (May 28, 1780 August 16, 1857) was a Presbyterian minister, born in Scotland and an immigrant to Upper Canada. Bell and his family settled in Perth, Upper Canada, in 1817. He was a significant figure in promoting and expanding the Presbyterian faith among the settlers in his region. He assisted in starting congregations in Beckwith Township, Lanark, Smiths Falls and Richmond. His carefully constructed diaries and other writings provide an important insight into the interactions between the United Synod of Upper Canada (aligned with the Scottish United Secession Church) and the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Canada (aligned with the Church of Scotland). Robert Bell (Lanark County Politician)
Robert Bell (March 16, 1808 – April 2, 1894) was a businessman and political figure in Canada West. He was born in London, England in 1808, the son of William Bell, and came to Perth, Upper Canada with his family in 1817. He worked as a printer at the ''Brockville Recorder'' under William Buell. In 1829, he opened a general store at Carleton Place as a partnership with his brother William's Perth business. He was postmaster at Carleton Place from 1834 to 1856. He was also later appointed justice of the peace. In 1842, Bell represented Beckwith Township on the first council for Bathurst District and he was district warden from 1847 to 1848. In 1850, he served as reeve for Beckwith Township and warden for the United Counties of Lanark and Renfrew. He represented Lanark County in the Legislative Assembly from 1848 to 1851 and Lanark North from 1854 to 1864, when he was appointed inspector of canal revenues in the Department of Finance. William Morris (Canadian Businessman)
William Morris (October 31, 1786 – June 29, 1858) was a businessman and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Paisley, Scotland in 1786, the son of a Scottish manufacturer. His family came to Upper Canada in 1801, where his father set up an import-export business. The business failed and his father retired to a farm near Elizabethtown (Brockville). After the death of his father, he opened a general store with his brother, Alexander. He joined the militia during the War of 1812. In 1816, he opened a second store in the new settlement at Perth. In 1818, he was appointed justice of the peace in the area and, in 1820, he was elected to the 8th Parliament of Upper Canada representing Carleton. He represented Carleton and then Lanark until 1836, when he was appointed to the Legislative Council. He also served as lieutenant-colonel in the local militia.
